I think you mean you have a 500Mbps connection which equates to being able to download 62.5MB of data per second.

Which file and which port? Assuming you are using this page using my Virgin Media 250 Mbps (Megabit/second) cable connection, the 1 gigabyte file on Port 80 downloads in less than a minute. My web browser (firefox) shows 26 MB/s (MegaBytes).

As your download is showing in KB/s (KiloBytes per second) it is a lot slower than mine. If you are using a phone or tablet, or WiFi then you need to use a laptop with Ethernet connection to do this test.

My desktop PC is connected directly to the Virgin Media hub/router by an Ethernet cable.

Which ISP are you on?

And since none of the TBB files have the name "test file.zip" as in your screenshot, exactly what did you do to start the download?

I think the OP is on Sky, given this forum. They previously posted in the Fibre forum about various problems with their FTTP connection.

I forgot command line wget times automatically, on my Windows 11 PC and 250 Mbit Virgin cable:

Hi,

I am on SKY, using Chrome the links did not open the files and had to right-click on the 1GB icon and save as the link.

I tried in Edge, and the links worked, clicked the file icon and it was the same story 41 minutes to download.

I tried port 80, as well as the other and the same story 41

This is what I am experiencing smile
One minute top speeds next minute its a relative crawl

That shows you are testing on WiFi, and this can happen with WiFi due to the way radio works.

When testing you need an Ethernet connection from a desktop or laptop to the router from your ISP.

I don't think it's that simple. 41 minutes to download 1.0GiB is only 3.5Mbps on average, which is less than 1% of the speed they should be getting, and furthermore the OP is claiming it's *repeatably* 41 minutes each time. But then they're also claiming that the speed is going up and down to speedtest sites.

I suspect the problem is most likely a Windows PC infected by malware, or with some low-quality third-party add-ons installed, or a failing hard drive or SSD. Only once you eliminate those possibilities can you then look at the broadband.

I agree that to get rid of any doubt they should do all tests as wired, but I would also use a Mac or a Linux device as the terminal. A Windows PC can easily be turned into a Linux box temporarily by booting from an Ubuntu live USB stick, without affecting what's on disk.

Testing to an Android or iPhone would also give a useful comparison - of course that would be over wireless, but in this case it doesn't sound to me like wifi is the problem.

More details - seems Openreach & ISP have been trying to fix, some ideas from Seb in this thread.
