Setting Up FTP

[link to this post]

First off Hi to everyone. I have searched he forums but can't find something that answers my problem.

So here we go current set up.

New Sky Sagem Router had since April 08.
Home Wireless network 1 laptop and 1 desktop
NAS Buffalo Linkstation Pro with FTP Server capability

What I want to do is give access to the NAS so I can access these when outwith my home network i.e other pc via FTP or some other means.

I have set up the NAS so the folder is shared and can access it locally using smartftp. However when I try to access externally I get a timed out connection message.

Is there a way to set this up or is it restricted by the Sky Router.

Any help appreciated

Have you configured port forwarding?

You need to punch a hole in your router firewall, to allow external access to the FTP server.
It's generally quite easy.
Have a look on portfoward to find out specific instructions for your router.

Search for DMZ option on your router. Enable it and forward the traffic to your Buffalo Linkstation IP.

Are you trying to access your FTP server, using your external IP address, whilst at home (i.e. from a PC on the same network as the NAS drive)?
If you are, that's a possible reason why the connection has been refused (many routers fall over when trying to do this - you need to be sat outside of your home network - i.e. at work, a friends or neighbour's etc.).

If you have set a static IP in your NAS drive, make sure that's the one set in your port-forwarding, and also check the subnet mask on your NAS drive, and your router LAN side are set to the same range (e.g. If your router is 192.168.1.254 and your NAS drive is 192.168.1.65, set the subnet mask at 255.255.255.0).

Do not do as suggested elsewhere (i.e. do not set your NAS drive in the DMZ - it will be totally exposed to the outside world, and could be easily hacked into), try and get it working with the firewall port-forwarding settings in your router.
DMZ should only be used if you're happy to give free ranging access (to an item on your network) to everybody, or the device has enough security measures to take care of itself.

ok.

Heres what I have done it stil not working. I can access it using smartftp using 192.168.0.2 and the necessary username/password from my laptop on the same network.

Someone else is trying to access it via smartftp by entering 192.168.0.2 ans user/password but it does not connect says did not respond.

The NAS IP is 192.168.0.2 and the subnet is 255.255.255.0 which is the same as the LAn I ahve also gone i to the NAS and put in the DNS addresses hat are the same as the default 192.168.0.1 for the sky router.

I have created a service in my sky router named FTP1 for tcp/udp on channel 21 in and out.

I have then created the following: -
# Enable Filter Name Action LAN Users WAN Servers
0 FTP1 Allow always 0.0.0.0 / 0.0.0.0(1:65535) 0.0.0.0 / 0.0.0.0(21:21)
Default Yes Any ALLOW always Any Any
Inbound Services
# Enable Filter Name Action LAN Server IP address WAN Users
0 FTP1 Allow always 192.168.0.2 / 255.255.255.255(21:21) 0.0.0.0 / 0.0.0.0(1:65535)
Default Yes Any BLOCK always Any Any

Is that other person trying to access the NAS from your LAN? The IP address 192.168.0.2 is only valid from within your LAN, for anybody else the IP address is that of your router with the port number you have set in port forwarding.
192.168.x.x are non-routable IP addresses so the other person will be looking for an address of 192.168.0.2 on their LAN.

Steve
