Re: Upload speed on Fibre?

[re: deleted] [link to this post]

I was previously getting 34 down 4.5 up.

Post upgrade, download is anywhere between 31 and 41, but upload has hardly moved, although I occasionally get 5.

5 out of 20 seems very low, especially compared to 41 out of 80.

My sympathies...

Leaving my routers off for 40 minutes had no effect whatever; my upload still sits at around 1Mbps.

As an aside, what speed testing sites give consistent results? I have found that my download speed is said to vary from 8Mbps to 35Mbps (once, a fluke?), even doing repeated tests with the same site, and similarly with other sites; upload speeds are said to vary betwee 0.5Mbps and 1.5Mbps. Those with a meter show the speed swinging up and down cyclically, and speedtest.net shows a sawtooth graph with peaks around 35Mbps and troughs around 10Mbps, but with varying width. It looks to me like a flow-control sort of problem - but does this come from the speed testers, the FTTC circuit, my router (Draytek 2820Vn; turning off the firewall had no effect), or what (I can say it's not Windows, because I see the same using the speedtest.net app on my iPhone)?

Oh, and is there any way to find out the synchronisation speed on an FTTC connection? The engineer who installed it muttered something about 39Mbps, but I wasn't clear in reptrospect if that was actual or theoretical.

Further to this, I tried speedtest.net from my work computer (limited by my subnet's 100Mbps connection to the university's backbone). It gave a completely smooth 93Mbps down and 68 Mbps up, so clearly the bad behaviour I see at home is caused elsewhere - i.e. in the FTTC link or at home (presuming it's not Zen!).

Paul, I take it you also turned your modem off at the same time ???

I used speedtest.net, appears consistent, and also shows any changes in performance over the test. My download has always been stable, but the upload would peak then suddenly drop off. once fixed the upload performace increases thoght out the test. zen can tell you your sync rate, or you can go to the bt speed test site speedtest.bt.com (i think), this will show your profile, whcih can be roughly converted back to sync rate

Yes, by "routers" I meant both my box and BT's, which of course is a modem (I don't know if it has any routing capability as well, because it's not exposed to us). I turned off my router as well because the first time, when I simply restarted the modem, the router wouldn't connect again until I cycled its power too - no idea why, but even clicking "Dial PPoE" did nothing.

The very variable results I get from speedtest.net seem to be nothing more than that the answer given is the transfer rate at the instant the test ends, so can be anywhere on the sawtooth. The graph it displays is in fact much the same each time.

Heh! It turns out that my profile is one of those that haven't been updated by BT yet.

I have the same issue - 27 Mbps down and 1.6 Mbps up - powered down modem and router for 1 hr and still the same on reconnecting.

What's going to be the best course of action - wait for the next regrade in May, or is that going to have no effect with me being stuck presently?

At the moment BT don't have a "quick" solution to this. It should update automatically, but in a number of cases it isn't doing, even after a reboot of the BT modem (although the regrade has been 'successful' in terms of making the option available).

We're talking to BT to get a solution for customers, but for anybody who is in urgent need of the change we'd recommend contacting Support. It may involve an engineer visit to resolve - which means time off for those using FTTC at home, hence it's best not to take this approach if the upgrade isn't critical to you. Our aim is to get a solution from BT which doesn't require engineers and inconvenience to our customers.

kind regards,
Phil.

Thanks Phil - will we be notified by email when a solution is around, or is it a case of just keeping an eye here etc?

Ta.

Glad you posted this, I was afraid I was the only one! I phoned Zen last week and they got BT to do something (I assume this quick fix that is being mentioned), but alas no joy.

I've just tried powering down my modem for half an hour and there is no difference.

Is there any details on what the problem is, or what BT's resolution is?
