Re: Considering fibre with Zen/others - am I missing somethi

I dont have dialup style latency on BT.

there is some small amounts of jitter (I think due to how their routing works, not due to congestion as is same 24/7). but its only small 1-2ms. Base latency isnt optimal again due to their weird routing I go to london via birmingham, but its certianly not dialup latency, bbc is 15-19ms from me on fast path.

BT Infinity 2 Since Dec 2012

Also zen seem very inflexible on varying usage patterns, they have what seems to me a horrific topup price structure £1,50 per gig (am I wrong?). Alternatively one can upgrade to a higher package to avoid that but it means paying off the old package whilst starting a new min term for the new package meaning cant do things like upgrade for just 1 month.

This has been mentioned before and I recall that it was linked to changes to the care package with larger bandwidth products; ie, you had to buy yourself out of the old and then buy in to the new. I thought that the Zen rep had agreed that in cases where customers only wanted more bandwidth this was something of an own goal. Clearly, Zen management hasn't seen the need to change.

From experience, IDNet is happy to upgrade FTTC products within the original 12 month contract.

I'll be going with IDnet if I decide against BT then! I am worried about the 100GB limit... I don't think i'll go over but I need to peace of mind that I can upgrade if necessary without incurring another 12 months.

But ultimately if there is a problem won't Openreach be called in to play anyway, albeit via Zen as the middle men?

This is sort of what I was getting it, it's all BT anyway so apart from getting through to customer service *if* goes wrong what am I gaining? doesn't it all go down the BT pipes anyway?

Er, no.

It might well do from you to the exchange and to wherever Zen take the connection from (one of the 21CN points I guess), but you end up then using Zen's network, and it's peering and transit arrangements.

There's nothing much wrong with the core backhaul network, but in my experience the BT Retail setup is a mess.

I'd go with Sky too. Oh wait, I did...

I don't know what you mean about no Pro available - as far as I knew, Sky offered Fibre Unlimited Pro if you call and ask for it, but not online. Presuming your line can handle greater than 40 meg - if it can't Infinity can't either.

I've got Fibre Unlimited Pro (anyone else find it amusing the initials make "FUP" one of the most hated terms in broadband?), running full throttle 80/20
