Re: Slow FTTC connection (Zen Fibre Pro)

That speed estimator looks to be just republishing a test lab profile 17c graph and raises too many hopes of speed at the longer distance.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/guide/fibre-broadband.... has slightly lower estimates, and ends at 1.5km for a good reason.

Due to the ANFP in the UK and expected effect of cross talk, beyond 1.5km VDSL2 is more of a lottery and becomes a try it and see issue. Or put another way at 3km VDSL2 in the UK is probably just 1 to 2 Mbps.

In reply to a post by MrSaffron:
There was a hint you are using the modem at the end of an extension, going back to the master socket is a good test, but the DLM may have capped you already (DLM controlled by Openreach).

The Openreach engineer will not care which provider you are with, they deal with them all equally. They are more used to the BT Home Hub simply because they've seen millions of them.

My advice get an unlocked HG612 and investigate the line stats and then we can figure out if the line is slower that expected, or just going the wrong LONG way to the cabinet (which does happen).

Not an extension, but a long cable, data-only wall mounted socket which the BT engineer gave me with the crimping tool. I've connected the modem via DSL cable to the master socket. No other phone lines or cables in the property.

And found the guide to hack the modem, looks easy enough (have loaded custom fw on a PSP and have a modded Xbox). Might be a little while before I can do it and post back but will report back.

Again thank you for the suggestion.

Thanks Mr S. I was trying to be helpful by producing something that shows the effect of a long copper connection to a FTTC cabinet. I am not sure that hacking the modem is going to get the OP anywhere. It might show that interleaving has been imposed on his line but the ISP isn't going to respond given that his download speed is within the acceptable range. I stand ready to be proved wrong.

I'm on Zen 80/20 FTTC and get the full 80/20 experience as my line max rates are currently 90/31 so my connection is being 'administratively' limited to 80/20. I'm about 250m from my cabinet as the cable runs.

I'm using DSLstats to obtain this information from my modem.

To determine the source of the OPs speed limit (whether technical due to line length/noise or administrative due to being on the wrong product/profile ) seeing the modem stats would be very useful.

It may be that the line is only good enough for 35Mb and so changing to an 80/20 product won't result in any speed increase.

Likewise, I get a full 80/20 service from Zen and modem stats are useful when it comes to checking whether interleaving has been applied to my line. That said, the OP has raised a ticket and I am sure given Skyfire's comments above that Zen will have checked all the obvious things such as the product, profile etc. FWIW, when I transferred my FTTC connection to Zen I noticed that I had gone from 80/20 to 40/2. I didn't need the stats to know this and Zen quickly confirmed and corrected the engineer's mistake.

My guess is that the OP is struggling to come to terms with the fact that he is either on a long or poor line from the cabinet, and that the move to 80/20 led him to believe that he would see a doubling of his speeds. In fairness, this is what used to happen; i.e., 512 to 2Mbps to 8Mbps etc. My daughter has just moved her connection from ADSL to FTTC and whilst she lives reasonably close to the telephone cabinet which serves her property, BTOR appear to have used aluminium rather than copper lines. Pragmatically, she says that a 30Mbps stable connection is better than the 2.5Mbps connection that they had in the past.
