Strange downloads

[link to this post]

I've just been looking at my download data on the control panel and I notice that even in hours where I have had my PC switched off I am shown as having downloaded approx 51.2k each and every hour.

Anyone know why this is? I thought that AAISP pinging wasn't counted as a download

Do you connect using a router? If so, you are still connected and will no doubt get scans from other hosts looking for vulnerable devices - even though you have not caused this traffic, it is still counted as it will have hit your routers WAN IP.

You could class it as 'background' traffic and it'll happen to everyone.

The pings from aaisp don't count in your usage.

It's just background traffic, I see a little more than that but have servers
running continuously. Logs show most of the background level being
rejected at the firewall with only a small percentage being legitimate
traffic.

Thanks,

I see that you are both attributing it to background traffic. however what struck me as odd was that I get the same 51k evey hour, hour after hour , day after day. surely background traffic would be more random.

Assuming you use a router from your post. Could it be that it is checking for firmware updates, maybe even syncing with a time server.

From what I recall, AAISP 'ping' you via LCP which is not counted against any of your usage based transfer.

That's a possibility. I am using a router, I'll read up the manual for any clues.

thanks

Don't worry about it, that is standard on every AAISP broadband circuit. Mine varies around 51.4k.

It's not IP traffic so it's not billable.

That's correct, Technically the LCP ping and reply is transported between the end user's MSAN or node and AAISP by L2TP so it is actually a payload within IP framing. So yes, the pings register on the traffic stats ( since it is using backhaul IP capacity to and from the ISP ) but since it has an LCP payload and orginiates at AAISP it doesn't count as Internet traffic.
