Bank Holidays - why is it peak?

[link to this post]

Hello,

as I understand, the bank holidays are - with regards to traffic - treated as normal weekdays, i.e with normal peak time 9am to 6pm.

Why is that?

Okay, I don't mind AAISP to getting the money as they provide a very good service and deserve it alone for that.

But my question goes beyond that. The whole tariffs on AAISP are quite elaborate and - as I understand it - based on the model that it is peak business times where it is expensive and otherwise very cheap. Considering that, I think that there is not many businesses open at all (apart from retail which is neither internet nor VOIP relevant). Business VOIP and video conferences are probably down to zero on a bank holiday which both together must eat the most bandwidth during a normal business day (and hence bring in major revenue for AAISP). So if I am not mistaken, that bandwidth remains unused on a BH?

So what is the reasoning behind it? If there is any. It might be just a matter of "was always like that".

For BT and many of the big suppliers who would even like to charge peak phone rates on Christmas day, I could answer the question easily myself: to get more money.

But it must be different with AAISP as everything I see looks like it is genuinely cost-related in their price setup.

Kind regards

It is also the same with Entanet based services, and other ISPs who specify a weekend/daytime use allowence.

Sure, I know that many others do that. But they also do many other things that AAISP do not do. BT have just extended their peak times for landline phone calls from 6pm to 7pm, purely to make a bit more money out of it wink

The peak/offpeak times of AAISP are the only ones I know that are very closely connected to real office times (9-6), other ISPs have longer peak periods.

And in fact, AAISP do almost everything different than the other ISPs, and I mean that in a very positive way smile

So it is all the more the question why they go on the issue of Bank Holiday peak times "with the other lot", although it is not real office/business time.

Is your bb a bt based service? if it is then it maybe a case of aaisp just passing on their costs to you, if bt charge peak rate for bandwidth over bank holidays then aaisp will presumably also have to pay that peak rate to btwholesale, so why would they then loose money by charging customers off peak rates?

Same as why do BT class bank holidays as a normal working day because apart from not going to work it's a normal weekday tbh
