moving from bt

I think that I need to move from bt.
Below is my 2 speed test results.

Download Speed: 339 kbps (42.4 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 379 kbps (47.4 KB/sec )

Speed Down 331.10 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )
Speed Up 375.69 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )
Port 8095
Server speedtest1.thinkbroadband.com
Freethorpe exchange in Norfolk.

I should be getting up to 8Mbps, so this is not good. BT tells me that there is nothing wrong at their end, it must be on my computer.
12 months contract.
Anyway, I want to try aaisp. Can I migrate across from bt before my contract ends. Even if they keep taking my money it could be worth it.

What are your line stats? Could be lots of things...

(a) just too far from the exchange
(b) misconfigured internal or external wiring
(c) a fault somewhere
(d) something else...

Your not the only one considering moving from BT... they are just completely rubbish any more...

I'm quite tempted by AA - they seem perfect for our needs in all regards except I'm not sure how we'd get on with the peak time allocation... as a family with 4-5 active users we generally hit 700-800Mb a day between 10am and 10pm and then prolly 2gig between 10pm and 10am as we try to keep downloads, etc. to night time.


As to the OP - router stats and your BT speed test results would be helpful in narrowing down the problem:

The peak hours for A&A are 9am to 6pm (ie work hours) so do you have any idea what your usage is in these hours ?

Yes - you are getting up to 8Mbps, but that doesn't mean you WILL get 8.

Use the BT tester to find out how fast you should be getting. Also, how far are you from the exchange?

Well the main problem is - with several family members using the connection theres a good chance someone will decide to say DL a game off steam (some weigh in at 7gig) one day during peak time and use up the entire allocation in one go - potentially costing loads for the internet bill that month.

You can migrate in contract, but you may be liable for payment of remaining fees. AAISP is only really for people who use in th internets in evenings and download heavy at nighttime and weekends. Not good if you're a heavy user outside those times.

Would been good for AAISP to introduce a system in which a user can logon to a webpage can disable downloads over a certain ammount without concent through an automatic email of some kind. If my house was on AAISP, we would have bills into the 100's on some occasions.

You can set it to SMS you when you get close to the limit, to buy more bandwidth for that month or tell whoever it is to stop whatever it is they're doing.

Remember you can go over your limit by 100% without being charged.. it rolls over to the next month, so if you go over one month just up your allowance for a couple of months until your 'overdraft' is paid off.

I wish they made that a bit clearer and to stand out on their website because that really is a brilliant facility that they should capitalise on in their sales pitch.
