I guess this came from a discussion about someone not using all their allowance? seems logical to start doing it if enough people starting to complain about losing allowance - especially when there is a high abelt fixed price every month.
The hard allowances do of course stop those people joining that would abuse the network by taking a disproportionate amount of it if it was unlimited.

Fair enough - if someone wants to use their 10TB every month no one will have a problem with that. I believe the service is throttled with usage taken from the next month's allowance when the limit is reached?

That's the important question though. I don't have an option to use the 1TB service on an ongoing basis, as my usage would always be in excess. But equally, I don't need 10TB a month. If I have the option of building up a few months worth of 10TB rollover (which for me would probably be 4TB of rollover each month) then I'd only need to pay for the more expensive service a few months of the year. it would make quite a difference to the monthly cost for me.

Two years ago there was a discussion about AAISP quotas (even though well off-topic) in this thread. At that time you could change between bands without any penalty or problem. There has been nothing to say that the policy has changed so you should be able to mix-and-match to get the most cost-effective service.

There is a throw-away remark here that implies it may not be straightforward:

At present there are a few restrictions changing to/from terabyte quotas, but we hope to remove these in future.

I did ask someone on the AAISP website chat, but they didn't know, and suggested I get back in touch Monday (which I plan to do).

Yes it is half of the total unused that is rolled over including previous rolled over amounts. So if you are on 10TB and your first month you have 8TB left over, the next month you get 14TB (10 + 8/2). If you use only 2TB again, then the following month you get 16TB rolled over (10 + 12/2), so for most people they have an ever increasing allowance.

Although at a pure mathematical level it is "ever increasing" - it basically gets ever closer to 2 * (Quota - Usage). So the most it could ever reach is (almost) 2 * quota.

For me at 2.5TB usage a month that means I could flip back and forth either every month or 2 months and have enough quota in the bank to cover my usage (assuming you're allowed to roll over across different plans). If I waited 3 months the halving of the rollover would mean I'd no longer have enough banked to cover my usage.

From the AAISP website:

You can change quota/units at any time. The change takes effect from your next regular bill. Simply use our broadband order pages to request a change of quota/units. Note this is not possible in the early hours of the morning on the date you are billed, so ensure any change is done before midnight.

I dropped my AAISP quota recently, the accumulated quota is retained but rolls over at the normal quota remaining/2 rate.

Thanks, I just did this, I'm only using around 1.5TB/mo. I think I'm only going to need to have one month in 3 or so with the 10TB.

Seems like a 5TB quota would be useful here. Right now I have 18.4TB quota remaining. This is with 300M FTTP for the past 6 months.
The more quotas they offer, the closer it gets to being a units-based service!

I've just been switching mine back and forth. I can basically do 1 month on 10TB and 2 months on 1TB and still have a little bit left in the bank.
A bit annoying to have to keep doing though, but worth it to save £80 / year.
