Replacing Router

Hi

I’m planning to replace the Technicolor router that was supplied by Andrew and Arnold by an Asus ax86u. Do I need to make any changes to the ASUS router’s configuration? Or will it work without the need of me making any entries?

Without knowing what type of internet service you have and with what ISP nobody can answer that.

Your technicolour may have a built in modem. If it does and you have a DSL service then you will not be able to do a like for like swap as the Asus has no inbuilt modem.

If you are with AAISP and have a separate modem (or ONT for FTTP) then you should only need to add your PPP login details to the Asus.

I have an FTTC service provided by Andrew and Arnold. The modem router is a DGAO122N. So I’m guessing replacing it with the Asus is a no go. Any recommendations as to what would be a suitable modem router to replace my Technicolor?

Edit I have a FTTP connection with Zen - with the supplied Fritzbox which has awful WIFI; so I may use the Asus ax86U as a replacement for that instead.

Unfortunately not.
The RT-AX86U is just a router with no modem.

Asus RT models are just routers.
The Asus models with an integrated modem start with DSL, like the Asus DSL-AX82U, though personally I wouldn't recommend a combined modem/router from Asus.

I actually use a RT-AX86U, it's a brilliant router. The Technicolour may have a bridge mode option allowing it to be used with the Asus.

Or I might use it as a replacement for my Zen FTTP Fritzbox 😊

Would I just need to enter my PPP username and password?

As for modem routers suitable for an AAISP FTTC connection - any recommendations?

Reading your post here and your posts on other boards on this forum, I would suggest that you take a step back and take the time to analyse what you want to achieve.

If I can remember correctly from the other postings you currently have three separate internet connections with different providers which you explained that you needed as you required the resilience that set up supplies. However, none of the three providers supply kit that gives an adequate WiFi signal throughout your property.

There are other ways to provide the resilience in a less complicated manner but that would need you to decide that your existing set up is not the most efficient or optimal way to achieve your resilience goal. If you do decide to make that mental leap you would no longer need to spend your time worrying about which router you can connect to which network, which expensive bit of hardware to resource next etc. and you would also have the potential to reduce your monthly outgoings. Each to their own and you may well have other valid reasons to stay with your existing set up but at face value you seem to be over-complicating things to achieve what you want.

Put in a mesh system for that one router. With all due respect that is not the question you first asked.

No, true - the many learned responses allowed me to refine my question and gave it added focus. While initially I was hoping that there would be some way to amplify all three wifi networks, I know realise it’s more practical and workable to chose one.

The sadder irony, is that although I’ve ended a little clearer; I leave somewhat shamed by the insinuation that I’m somehow crazy to want to subscribe to several different broadband technologies (Cable, FTTC and FTTP).
