Strange latency issue

[link to this post]

I recently moved from IDNET to AAISP, and am loving the new experience.

My connection is more stable and speeds are oddly improved.

But on IDNET my maximum latency was far lower.

This is what I had on IDNET:

https://1drv.ms/i/c/a8a024484a25d465/IQAUnyfxxgf3Qav...

And this is AAISP:

https://1drv.ms/i/c/a8a024484a25d465/IQCrtAJz-k30RZA...

What's odd is that the speeds are noticeably faster with AAISP. Plus the speed tests show a lower latency.

Is this a case of simply ignoring the weirdisms? Or is there an issue there.

Thanks in advance for your help

Both graphs arent great, if they caused by utilisation, then the higher speed would impact latency more.

No, they're not great. You're right.

But I work from home and (sadly) work long hours.

The 5-10 is spike is caused by video call then TV.

And the 2AM by Backblaze.

if they caused by utilisation, then the higher speed would impact latency more

Great, thank you. That's basically what I wanted to know.

Thanks for your reply.

From what you reported, you in a better place, for the vast majority of situations, faster and more stable throughput is what you want.

Yes, very much. I just wanted to understand why the latency was so much higher, but overall speed notable faster. Interesting.

And thanks for your reply smile

What is your internet speed, are you on ADSL/VDSL? It doesn't look like FTTP.

Have you changed router?

You can possibly make some tweaks to improve things - as others have said it looks like the connection is becoming saturated which unless you are on a very slow service, shouldn't happen on a video call.

There's less packet loss though on AAISP so even though the graphs still don't look great, going by the latency graphs alone, it would appear you should have a better experience on AAISP.

I'm appalled at how little info I included frown

Apologies. I should know better at my age!

It's a VDSL connection.

Router wasn't changed since switching.

Using a Draytek Vigor 2763.

TV in the evening seems to have the greatest impact.

Any idea what changes I might make?

And yes, overall AAISP has been much better. Getting very little packet loss compared to IDNET.

Thanks.

See here: https://support.aa.net.uk/Other_Line_Options

Try changing line rate to 95% VoIP and see if it helps with your voice calls etc. It will however reduce the overall throughput of the connection. If your voice calls etc are OK though, and TV isn't experiencing any visible problems, I'd probably leave it at 100%

No harm in trying though.

Thank you - I'll give that a go.

One last question - is there a risk that by playing around with the settings I may lower sync speed?

That said, I'm the sort of the person who can not (and will not) resist pushing a button if it's there...

That AAISP setting has no affect on sync speed, it also wont drop your sync session, but you might need to cycle the PPP session for it to take effect.
