Zen BQM

[link to this post]

I have just moved to Zen 100Mbps FTTP and all seems to work well. Ookla speedtest gives 108Mbps down and 20Mbps up with 2-3 ms ping. A packet loss test shows zero lost packets

I set up the BQM and it shows some strange things. At the bottom there is a zig-zag pattern repeating 2 hourly and at the top red streaks indicating packet loss.

Should I be worried or should I just ignore the BQM as other tests show no problems?

Can't work out how to post link to BQM!
Click Share Today's Snapshot Graph under the graph, then Generate (if requested).

Then copy/paste the Text Link - BBCode (for forums; including thinkbroadband forums) (5th one down) into your post.

eta- if it's not affecting your use of the internet then it's probably not worth worrying about overmuch, but packet loss is never a good thing to see....

Its the Fritzbox and how it responds to ping, if you get multiple sources pinging it you can make some weird and wonderful patterns on the BQM graphs.

Thanks for the reassurance. As it doesn't impact my use of the internet I'll ignore it. I did wonder if it was a quirk of the Fritzbox.

The sawtooth happens - and I don't really know why, on different routers and ISPs with differing repeat times. Mine, on BT Business with a UDM-Pro repeats hourly and is nothing to worry about.

The bursts of red at te top - those are more of concern. Do they tie up with anything you are doing?

Nothing that I'm doing causes the red, it's often worse in the middle of the night!

Heres mine, when it gets a huge amount of loss is when I started pinging from a extra external source and then it shows huge loss. The Fritz will respond to 1 ping then drop 4 respond and so on. While it was showing the loss I had no issues with the connection while downloading and playing games online.

They have a ping rate limit which is configured very low (like 1 per second) and just the jitter from the connection is enough for some to trigger this it seems. I looked into it, and though you can re-configure this on the fritzbox from their configuration file (it's encrypted, but tools exist to decrypt), Zen overwrite the configuration every time the unit connects to their servers.

For that reason alone I'd ditch the Fritzbox - having a router in your home under someone else's control seems a bad idea.

Thanks for the explanation jimbof. I am reassured that my connection is fine and its the Fritzbox causing the red on the BQM. I'll stick with the Fritzbox though as I dont have a problem with Zen being able to access it.
