Can I just ignore all this upgrade stuff?

[link to this post]

I'm very happy!! 2Mb/s (never been MAXed) and rock-solid connection (wired and wireless) through my Voyager kit. Will I have to change anything? I'm not anti-techie or anything like that, it's just that if I'm content, why fiddle with things? I did hear that everyone will have to go over to MAX by July - is that still the case, given all the problems?

Not seen anything suggesting automatic upgrades so would assume you can stay on your legacy services for the time being

That word 'legacy' has lots of history for me. My old WIN 98SE system would never shut down properly, no matter what I tried.; this went on for 3 years. Then, about 6 weeks before I upgraded, I saw an article on a US forum saying that disabling legacy Soundblaster drivers in Device Manager solved the problem - and it did! I shut down perfectly after that.
Hope this 'legacy' BTY doesn't start causing problems. (Only joking, I know there's no software involved!).

Should have said "fixed speed" rather than legacy. Still standing in the corner for that.

I think that you have to contact BT and ask them to upgrade you. To be honest, you're better off on 2mb.

I wish people (no offence to you Bingefellow) would stop making all encompassing statements like this.

SOME people might be better off staying on a fixed rate line. Others, like myself, have benefited enormously from MaxDSL, having gone from a 1MB line to a throughput speed of 2.5MB, with good stability etc.

No way would I have got this under the previous system with an attenuation figure of 60DB.

Yes there are people with problems, and hopefully in time they will get sorted, or if not other threads on here show how to revert back to a fixed speed.

The OP should go for it...you've got nothing to lose.

'Nothing to lose'....except a stable connection with virtually no down time (since 2002).

im staying put on "legacy" 1mbit and the old option 3 (20GB). we were never included in the upgrades to 2mbit (our line wouldn't have passed) and i doubt we'll be rushed to the head of the queue for max.

aint broke, aint fixing it.

You will still have sound as these drivers were being loaded but not used as I had a more up to date soundcard which had its own drivers. The problem is that WIN98 systems often had legacy drivers to run older cards and mine was ticked to be loaded on startup. There was an IRQ conflict on shutdown, which caused the system to hang.
Unticking this in device manager solved the problem, but remember to only disable the legacy drivers (Soundblaster). I also found that emptying my Temp Internet files cache before shutdown and stopping my antivirus from checking the floppy drive on shutdown worked a lot of the time. WINXP shuts down perfectly nowadays, so why not upgrade?
