Thought others might like to post the details of working systems.
Here are my details so anyone can compare etc:
Router: Netgear DG834 - wired. Sync'd at 8128kbps D, 448kbps U.
Line Attenuation: 28dB D, 6.5dB U
Noise Margin: 11dB D, 23dB U
1 Binatone Coreless & 1 wired phone into a double splitter via a filter into a BT wall socket.
Router plugged via a filter into another BT wall socket.
3rd BT wall socket not used.
Computer connected via Ethernet. MTU set to 1490 on router & computer.

Speed tested via BroadbandMax.co.uk on Day 1 after reset:
Download = 4750kbps
Upload = 370kbps
