Wireless Access point with Hub

[link to this post]

I have sort of got my hub working reasonably but I want to place it right where the line in for the phone connection is and have two computers conencted wirelessly.

Is it possible for me to connect my linksys router as an access point? Ive read that access points need to be commected to hubs through ethernet, but surely this defeats the point?

The desktop with the wireless card is only about 3 rooms away but it doesnt even pick up the signal (it occationally does at very low but drops out regularly). Hence why I want to see about using my old wireless router as an access point...

any ideas?

i've tried plugging in the old routher wirelessly and the desktop finds it, but i cant connect to it. I keep getting invalid IP (I have also tried turning off DHCP on the access point).

Sould I just go get some wireless cards with a higher strengh or is it the home hubs faul?

Not entirely sure of what you mean but I think you want a wireless booster rather than a WAP.

Not sure how you think an extra WAP would connect to the router. WAPs provide downstream wireless. Upstream is wired.

However before you spend money on a lot of expensive kit, try this. Put the Home Hub up high. It will get more range this way. Put an antenna (aerial) extender on the desktop and use it to get its antenna higher. You can get them for about three quid plus postage on Ebay.

You can do this as long as your Linksys router supports WDS (Wireless Distribution System). You don't need to connect the Linksys router by Ethernet of course.

If you don't know if it does, just try it anyway. What you need to do is configure the Linksys router with the same wireless settings as your BT Home Hub. So the SSID, wireless encryption key and wireless speed settings need to be the same. Maybe the channel needs to be the same too. Just make it all the same.

Then go into the BT Home Hub's configuration and find the wireless section in Advanced. Somewhere will be a link saying "Scan for wireless access points". If you have version 6.2.2.6 of the BT Home Hub, it will be in the Advanced > Wireless > Repeater section. Let it scan and find your Linksys router and if WDS is supported by your Linksys router, enable WDS and it should work as an access point.
