Switch to BT from Tiscali - Slow Slow Connection

[link to this post]

Has anybody else come across this situation.
I was on BT broadband and upgraded to BT Total Broadband which included a wonderful new hub. I installed my 2 PCs on it using ethernet and it worked fine. It was done within half-an-hour.
My friend has just switched from Tiscali to BT Total Broadband and received exactly the same hub. The service was activated on Tuesday and I was asked to install it for them.
Again using Ethernet (just 1 PC this time) it all seemed to go fine. Connection lights remain on and constant and all the conections on the PC tell me everything is working ok.
The connection speed however is appalingly slow.... even worse than dial-up although it did speed up slightly this morning. Is this part of the 10-day training period since it has been pretty unusable? Has anyone else experienced such a slow start?
The only other worrying thing is that when I try to connect to the hub itself using the 'hub manager', it tells me it can't connect to it.
Everything tells me its connected properly but something seems a bit weird. Any ideas anyone?

To get to the HH key the address 192.168.1.254 into a browser.

Try www.speedtester.bt.com to see how fast the linei s syncing at and what the IP Profile is.

Thanks for that.

I'm not quite so concerned about not connnecting to the hub since it acts a bit strange on my own network. If I connected first using my other PC, it won't let me connect from my 2nd PC and vice-versa.

Its really the speed issue which is a pain since pages take an age to load. I'm not sure if this is common in a new (or switched) broadband service or if I have a problem I should be investigating somewhere.

Based on this: "The only other worrying thing is that when I try to connect to the hub itself using the 'hub manager', it tells me it can't connect to it." I thought that ytou dis want to cnnect to thre HH.

I suspect you network problem won't be of the HH's making. If you explain what you mean by "I connected first using my other PC, it won't let me connect from my 2nd PC and vice-versa."

As to speed I'd leave it for the ten day "training period".

This "I connected first using my other PC, it won't let me connect from my 2nd PC and vice-versa." is just a weird thing about the hub manager and isn't a big problem , just a pain sometimes. I agree with you that its unlikely that the slowness is to do with the HH.

My friend phoned to tell me that the speed has picked up although like most people who don't know too much about these things, they expected the 'up to 8mb' meant that they would immediately get 8mb. Training periods and the fact that they would probably get a lot less than 8mb are never explained to them.

Its just that having known about training periods and having not experienced such a thing myself, I didn't expect how painfully slow it could be to start with.

I'll keep monitoring it and hopefully things will pick up.
