I have just signed up on BT option 3 and am in the middle of my ten day line learning period. Please can someone tell me that download speeds will get better after 10 days. Just downloaded a file at a measly 29.4KB /Sec.

Please go to http://speedtester.bt.com and carry out a speedtest and post the results here.

Yeah a stuck profile, nothing you can do until the 10 day period is over but yeah things will get better.
You should currently be getting 2meg.

There must be some traffic shaping on my connection post 6pm as I have just downloaded a file at 245KB/SEC 4.30 p.m

What will I need to do after 10 days is up to get things moving

Nothing, what is it your downloading which is going at that speed? Just the speedtest you posted is fine apart from the profile that is.

I was downloading Irvanview from TUCOWS site last night but today downloaded from Audacity website at 245KB/SEC - must be line shaping
|
|
|
|
Most likely tucows. BT would not shape HTTP or FTP.

|
|
The time that you are talking about is peak use time. It's more likely to be contention rather than shaping.

What's the difference between contention and throttling- I'm quite new to all this BB jargon
|
|
|
Contention is the number of people who are sharing the same bandwidth/line as you. That's why you sometimes find that download speeds are better in the daytime than at peak times.
Throttling is where the ISP will restrict the maximum transfer speed.
Think os a torrent, how you can Cap the upload or download speed, that's essentially what the ISP does when they throttle a connection.

You should feel lucky. I'm 4 days into my 10 day learning period (which I didn't know about until digging after things slowed down). My resul at 7AM this morning:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 250 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 896 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 223 kbps
If things don't improve considerably after 10 days I'm switching back to my Linksys WR54G which I checked is still giving me far better performance compared to the above. The above is affecting my ability to work. Both of us work from home, both for IT companies (so lots of big docs moving around, remote server access, VPN stuff going on). I guess you get used to a fast connection ... how did I ever manage with 56k?!?
I'm on firmware 6.1.1.R - brand new hub.

I've encountered in the past a couple of hubs which appear to get stuck on 6.1.1R for some reason, they don't seem to auto upgrade
you can force an upgrade using the recovery tool found at http://www.btopenworld.com/broadband/adhoc_pages/hub_firmware.html
It will wipe the settings back to factory defaults though!
The newer firmware usually syncs a bit higher than 6.1.1R
You plug your pc into the Ethernet port on the bottom of the Hub (i think it has to be the first one) and run the tool it should then upgrade the firmware for you.
Do this at your own risk, I will not be held responsible if it bricks your homehub
