capabilites of 2700HGV

Hi Folks,

like most other people, I'm always being disappointed by my BB speed. Sadly I'm stuck with BT since I rent my flat, and despite moving closer to the exchange from my old place, my speed has gone from 2MB down to 1MB (admittedly I was unbundled previously).

anyway, it was suggested to me that the BT homehub probably wasn't doing me any favours in the speed department and I should change it for a 2700HGV. However, I also allow my mate upstairs to use my line but since he works from home he spends all his time downloading movies etc.

so, my questions are
a) should I get this router to replace the homehub?
b) does this router give me the capability to throttle usage by MAC address so that he doesn't nick all my bandwidth? or at least see usage so I can examine it?

Your lower speed could be because of your mate soaking up the bandwidth maybe?

As for monitoring your mates bandwidth, if he is spending all his time downloading movies I cant imagine they have been paid for. Anything that goes down your connection such as your mates traffic, you are responsible for any legal action which may be taken because of it. Sharing your connection like this is also against your BT TBB T&C. Both things combined means you could get sued by the many agencies going out hunting users illegally downloading and also BT for breaking your contract.

You might want to think a few things over with sharing your connection.

Of course it is very easy (with a little amount of googling) to use the BT2700HGV with other ISPs.

Happily using a 2700 on Entanet here, and yes they are a fantastic piece of kit.

Older ones yes, new ones no chance of unlocking them.

Hence my enquiring about the 2700 as a couple of people have suggested it is better at long lines and noise margins.

Indeed it is, but first make sure your house wiring is all it could be.

Try the trad. fault finding steps first, connect the router to the test socket and check the speed then. It might be dodgy wiring that's holding back the line speed - if you see a big jump in spped at the test socket, that's the problem.

The 2700 is a good router for poor or long lines, better than the HH. I go from a 13-1400 sync to 1600+ on my 9.5Km line, enough for one profile step - 1000k to 1250k.

Top Tip - you shouldn't need to do any BIOS reflashing to the 2700 if you are a BT residential customer, and the Broadband Talk service "just works" too. I took a bog-stock BT one and had it working in a few minutes. The only drawback I've found is that you can't make the 2700 ring all the (voip) handsets when a landline call arrives.

PS - Your "mate" is a real cheapskate - doesn't pay for movies, doesn't even pay for the bandwidth to get them! Anyway, I've had a quick flip through the manual and couldn't see a way to limit bandwidth to specific IPs\MACs, but I haven't used the router much - someone who knows them better than me might be able to help. That's a feature I know that the Draytek range can do this, dunno what others do.

my experience with the 2700 router is the synch is indeed higher for the same margin and it does hold onto synch better than the average router but not as well as my speedtouch 585.

The model I got there was 2 effective ways of unlocking it, either using oem firmware or reconfiguring the router so it doesnt reset itself to BTs network but I cannot remember how that is done, mine came with the oem firmware which is what I kept.

The 2700HGV works fine with BT Broadband (non business). Needs a bit of work though. Ebay usually has both available. Both old & new models are ok, older models can be flashed with a modified unlocked firmware & newer models can be made to work using the DNS Poisoning method. If youre a BT residential customer you shouldn't need to - I certainly didn't need to flash the router or use the DNS poisoning.

I fed the router the domestic username (IIRC), set up BBT via the web configuration page, job done.

Stupid question - what values did you enter and where to configure the 2700HGV to use Broadband Talk?

Tried various combinations of my BBT login details in varying boxes with no success...
