External email servers

[link to this post]

I'm trying to help this poster with handling an UKOnline email mailbox/address in and out.

I cannot believe what he is saying, but I don't know the BT setup. Surely he can do the sort of thing I suggest? If anyone can help him please can they join in that thread?

Thanks.

BT Business block the default SMTP port, changing to an alternative solves the problem. Had the same issue on another BT Business connection, changing to the alternative SMTP port provided by 1and1 worked a treat. Just hope UKOnline have an alternative port.

The best solution would be to the move them to email hosted independent of ISP, say with Google Apps, Live for Domains or even a dedicated web host.

Thanks, yes smile. That's pretty well what I said to them but they seemed to think they couldn't do that.

You can move mail from UKOnline to Gmail as well if its a few accounts using POP3 or copy and paste using IMAP.

They need to move on I suppose, especially having their own domain they should have email flexibility. I suppose it depends how much the business values email.

As for the email servers, BT's SMTP server will work, but you would need to contact BT and get their domain added to the "accepted list" otherwise it wont send and fail. Last time I used it, it was super slow at sending and having long sending delays.

Most providers provide port 587 (iirc) for alternate as AO-Hell have done this for some time
