BT's Stupid 'Fair Use' Policy

[link to this post]

OK....so I got the standard email...'blah blah...you have exceeded 100gb...blah'. Actually I made sure it didn't EXCEED 100gb...it was 98.2gb.....so that gets my goat for starters.

But here is what is really, really, stupid. Most of those gb were not at 'peak times'. A lot is in the middle of the night. So why am I being penalised at peak times, for most of my bandwidth not being at peak times ?

Surely if a person is to be penalised at peak times.....it should be for excessive usage at peak times. Oh wait....I forgot....this is BT. Common sense is not their strongest point.

And just to make it even more farcical....I'm to be 'capped' to 1mpbs. Well...BT..that is great news and I cannot wait for the speed INCREASE as most of the time your lousy service does not even provide 1mpbs. So it's great to hear that every month I exceed 100gb BT will be doing their best to increase my download speed.

Personally I think I should get a BT medal for actually managing to download 100gb on such a lousy connection speed.

Call me picky if you like, but i am surprised your monitoring system can be as accrate as to whether it was 98.2 or 100.0gb. Also if you are only getting the speed you say then when do you ever sleep?

In saying that, I do think that BT should offer a truely 'unlimited' package to the heavy users at a premium rate perhaps and not advertise 'option 3' as unlimited.

I'm pretty sure BT are including unsolicited connection attempts, etc. into the useage calculations which add up to 1-2 gig a month... not to mention their useage calculations seem to be way way inaccurate, 98gig is cutting it way to close to be sure...

BT deff. needs to offer a higher package tho than teh current "unlimited" one.

100gb really is not a huge amount. A few hours in a MMOPRG like Second life, add on maybe a documentary on BBC iPlayer, downloading a little music, etc, and one can easily download 4 or 5gb a day. And this is without running any P2P software.

The 'high usage' users are simply using the internet for what it is intended for. The days when people ONLY ever surfed the net and posted on discussion forums or whatever are over. These days people want internet TV, 3D gaming, etc, etc.

I guarantee that within 5 - 10 years....people will look back and LAUGH and say ' Do you remember those days when people were penalised for downloading a piddling little 100gb a month ! '.........in the same way as people now laugh when recalling 56k modems.

Try 1440kbps modems.

Or even 300 baud.

Bob: Demon dialup >> Freeserve dialup >> BT Broadband >> Prodigynet >> Newnet >> O2 Standard.
Purple Cloud for domain, email and web space.

100gig is nothing when you have a family thats beyond the simple facebook/email and are streaming a reasonable amount, playing games online, etc.

One person using 100gig in a month is borderline excessive but 3-4 users on the same connection using the internet as its supposed to be used can easily hit the best part of 100gig.

Different days then, people used bulletin boards, I did with my amiga and I think it was more fun than the internet and more of a community feel. I used to use a BBS Scotland and then when that went down I used one in Seven Oaks.

Great fun, but could be expensive with phone calls.
