Slow broadband.

[link to this post]

Hi everyone smile

I have posted this in the technical section but didnt know that BT had people on these forums so am posting here too just in case they might reply.

I recently changed to BT broadband and im really starting to regret it! I have been with them now for 3 months after going for an offer that was for employees of the company I work for. Since my exchange was enabled years ago (im not sure when but its a long time) I have had no real problems with my broadband.

Basically the problem is the speed im getting. Its unbelievably slow and its driving me nuts!! When I do the BT speedtest it tells me around the following each time:

"Download speedachieved during the test was - 258 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :7648 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 6500 Kbps"

I have rang BT twice about this and the two calls total about an hour. They first told me that the looks fine and it must be ok, which was very helpful ... not! She told me to delete my IE cookies and run the speedtest again.

The day after that the speed wasnt as bad as it had been before that so I didnt bother ringing them back. But every day after that its been awful, so I rang them back again today. This time they told me to plug the router into the main socket and try that. I done this while on the phone and basically she told me that I would definitely see a big difference as the fault is most likely faulty wiring in the upstairs socket.

Now after playing about with downloads and youtube etc its still as bad as ever Its really really slow. And as well as that I can only do one internet related thing at once, ie stream video or download. Ive never had this problem.

Problems:
-Youtube videos are impossible to watch.
-Download speed from all sites including windows update and itunes are really slow.
-World of Warcraft my latency has been up to 5500ms so its impossible to play games some days too.
-Google is my home page and even it takes 3 or 4 seconds to load.
-www.speedtester.bt.com gives me results below the recommended for my connection.

Things I have tried:
-Unistalled firewall and antivirus.
-Swapped to main phone socket
-Tried connection on laptop.

I cant see what else I can do because it has got to be a fault with the line or something. When ringing BT they always seem keen to push paid support on to me. This costs (I think) £8 a month but you have to subscribe for 12 months.

I will ring BT back in a day or two and keep running the test to see what happens. im on an 18 month contract so I have 15 months to go, I cant even think about that because ill just cry my eyes out frown

Anyone have any ideas about what I should do?

Thanks.

Try swapping the router/hub for another to see if it is a fault with the hub ??
Also try plugging into the test socket (if you have one) ??
Also swap out the filters ??

If you have already tried these things ignore me but they are worth trying to eliminate problems as BT will ask you to try these things if you phone them !!

Ok going to send you a qucik email now. Thanks for replying.

I was at home at 7 after work but left there and came to my girlfriends house to use her internet. After waiting for 2 minutes or so after clicking "reply" to reply to this thread I gave up.

I done the speedtest again and today it was better this time. I got 750kps this time. But the internet was still too slow to bother doing online.

I realise this is peak time but im off work thursday, friday and saturday so ill do it more often those days.

I just read this thread and have been having the same problem
I ran VisualRoute 2010 and it found the following:
"In general, hops in this route respond slowly (over 423ms on average). All hops after hop 3 in network 'Broadband Business' respond particularly slowly."

It seems that the BT routers cant cope with traffic during peak periods, routers at Bletchly (194.72.31.38) seem to be the main bottle neck
