What are BT really like?

[link to this post]

Started broadband with wanadoo until it changed to orange and went south, then moved to the excellent zen but sky was much cheaper and after going berserk at them on the phone was ok but pings were not very good at all +50 on every game server compared to zen.

Recently moved to BT and was wondering how this ride will be, I'm still on the 10 day stabilization period and speed never gets above 600 Kbps downstream, the upstream always around 900 Kbps which is normal, they told me downstream improves drastically when the line finishes adapting.

If anyone who does not work for BT can tell me if things get better after this 10 day stabilization period, or should I start gathering speed test evidence now?

Speed tests from 2008 stored on this site show my connection can handle a 4meg downstream.

Things generally only get worse as the stablisation period progresses, i.e. it is very very rare for speeds to improve.

What you need to look at it

1. The speed the modem is connecting at
2. What IP profile you are getting
3. How are you measuring the 600-900Kbps

"they told me downstream improves drastically when the line finishes adapting." yeah right and we may £10,000 for every post on this bbs

BT Performance Tester is unable to run the speed test for your telephone number (LMFAO)

Using thinkbroadband, speedtest.net and speakeasy.net for testing speed.

Well we all make mistakes, and I really should of known better than choosing BT, they just told me I don't have broadband on my line and so this post must be is a illusion, and rather then banging my head on a brick wall for the next 18 months it would be better I think to pay to get out of this nightmare.

So FU BT and your BS, I'm off to zen wonderland.

Right, your new BT connection is being provided via the 'new' 21cn equipment in the exchange. This explains the tester not showing a response. Firstly, connect the router directly in to the test socket, and see how the statistics shown by the router may have changed. Second option, you have a stuck IP profile. Try contacting 'BT Care' who posts on here, and see if they can check/unstick the profile.

BT said I don't have broadband on this line, that has gotta be the all time best excuse I have heard yet, I give that one a 9.5 on the richter scale...

Ring BT support....hi this is BT what problem?............just checking with tech guy.................tech guy busy we get him to ring you..................tech guy trys to call me on my old number.

And around and around we go.

So I will have a stab at whats really happening, BT tell call centers to take their customers round the garden path while BT limits everyone to 600kbps which just happens to be the lowest acceptable limit in the contract, so the result is they can get loads more suckers on a modem, £Ching £Ching

Please do a TBB speedtest here and post the Direct Button Link from the Results page.

No need for speed tests but gonna go to the doctors and get a brain test, I'm really worried my brain decided to get BT broadband, must be something wrong with it tongue

It cost me £130 to get out the BT broadband contract, lesson learned, and I would advise anyone to only go with providers that have monthly contracts, zen for example, ahhhhh zen, cant wait to get back with zen, zen's the best....www.zen.co.uk

But I did learn that the 18 month contract with BT will be reduced to 12 months if you move residence and take the BT package with you, might be useful so someone...

Why did you go for 18 months? BT broadband is 12 months minimum?
Bt customer service have always been rubbish, but that is the problem with large ISPs, no matter who they are,m be it Bt, Talk Talk, sky or any of the others that use off shore customer service.

The only decent customer service i have had is from the smaller ISPs.

I must admit I had thoughts about coming back to BT , but to be honest apart from the problems i had when they downgraded my exchange, it have not been too bad. the shaping got on my nerves, but it is better now.

the Bt hub is not great, mind you if you got the version 2 it is better than the old one, my old one have gone pop and I am using my old Speedtouch 585, but that have a problem as well.

I don't think I would pay £130 to get out of a contract unless it was really bad, but then you could get out because the service was that bad and not pay anything.

I know Bt are not the best out there by a long way, but they suit me at the moment. I will wait for a few months to decide what I am doing.

God knows what length their contracts are coz BT don't.

At least sky fixed my slow speeds during a phone call less than 24 hours after complaining, BT was just passing me around from one idiot to another.

Paying £130 to get out of this groundhog day is worth it to me, and I will make sure they lose customers in the future to compensate.
