BT turned internet speed right down. IP profile 135Kbps!!!

[link to this post]

Over the last few weeks we have been getting very slow internet. Now I'm used to our connection fluctuating since we switched to BT so have only just got round to having a look at it now and do not like what I see.
With our previous provider (a Griffin re seller) they tested our line and at a push could maybe get 1Meg but it would probably be unstable so stayed on a 512kbps fixed. So as you can see our line is no where near fast at the best of times.

With BT we used to have speeds (non peak times) of just over the 400kbps mark. There was even one week where we were consistently over 720kbps so I know with BT that we can get these higher (for us) speeds.

For the last 2 weeks we have not been getting download speeds faster that the 130kbps mark!!!

I have run BT speedtester and am being told that our ip profile is 135kbps
Upload is at 288kbps with is a better speed that download so that is very strange.

We are with option 1 so if we exceed our usage we pay for each Gig we go over. Being read the same old thing from a script when trying to get help hasn't been of use.

The point is we had the speed (if you can call 400kbps speed), I know we can get up to 700kbps, yet right now we seem to have been slammed to a speed not much better than dial up. I really resent paying the same as everyone else when our speeds are so low.

Any suggestions on the best way to give BT a kick up the bum to actually sort things would be of great use.

Thankyou
Tom

Hello Thomas_4th

I would like to offer to help with this one. Follow the steps and tests in the link below to rule out any internal issues within your home that might be causing your speed problems.

If the link does not show any improvements drop me an email to the link in my profile and I will be happy to carry out further diagnostics for you to get this problems resolved.

If the link drops and reconnects at a low speed then then will be reflected in a low IP setting. \presumably your line has had such a low sync event. Question is , is it still connecting at a lower rate, in which case the IP profile will stay low, or has it recovered and remained at a stable, higher rate. YOu will need to check the line stats in your modem (attenuation, noise margins and line rate can help to identify connection problems )

Stuart, That link does not seem to work. I have also tried copy and pasting it into the address bar but it brings back a http 500 error.

Here are some stats from my router:

VPI/VCI - 0/38
Noise margin (Down/Up) - 16.3 dB / 7.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) - 71.4 dB / 31.5 dB
Output power (Down/Up) - 0.4 dBm / 0.7 dBm
FEC Errors (Down/Up) - 89 / 43919
CRC Errors (Down/Up) - 4 / 199
HEC Errors (Down/Up) - 5 / 53

Line attenuation (Down/Up) - 71.4 dB / 31.5 dB
Thats the largest downstream attenuation I have seen reported by a router.
Do you have the line rate to go with that?
Noise margin (Down/Up) - 16.3
Were these taken after a reboot/re-sync? That high downstream noise margin may be an indication of an unstable line.

We do have quite an unstable line which does lead to random drops and disconnections but it has never meant such a constant low speed for such a while before.

The line attenuation is still about the same at 69.9 dB / 31.5 dB
Noise is now at 7.5 dB / 7.0 dB

My hub is telling me I have a downstream of 704kbps and an upstream of 288kbps

Speed is still staying around the 130kbps mark. I get these random spikes for about 1 second when it jumps to around 410kbps. Not sure if that is it trying to do something.

I've not heard back from the BT guy above after sending them a pm as there is no email address in their profile.

The first thing that you need to do is to ensure that all your internal cabling and telephony equipment etc is in good order.

Yup that is done and done. I'm very used to having to try and sort things out at this end but it doesn't seem to be helping for this problem.

Have you checked your stats whilst connected to the hidden test socket of the NTE5 (If available)? It's very important that you do this because if you don't, and an engineer visit is raised, you could face a hefty bill.

Also, try a quiet line test. With only a corded handset connected, ring 147017070 option 2. If you hear any crackles, pops or whistles etc, report a voice fault.
