Are the downloads compressed at all? This may appear to send faster than is psychically possible.

You won't be able to actually download faster than the rate of the line (or IP profile) in this case.

Just as an aside to the rest of the thread, BT don't use your sync speed or IP profile to adjust throughput.

This is carried out further into the network, and different traffic types are assigned different priorities\bandwidth, depending on type.

Hvae a look at the products of www.arbornetworks.com to get an idea of how it is done.
