Hey Guys,
Just back from Canada, had a 100 Meg line coming in to the apartment. Now home realized that 4 Meg on SKY isn't good enough.
Ran a speedcheck on BT.com, advised I could get 28Meg on FTTC "Now".
I have forgotten the process. I would like to keep my phone with Sky and Move internet to BT FTTC. How would I go about doing this, or is it even possible?
Thanks
Paul

Just phone Sky and ask for your MAC (code), they gave me mine over the phone, and when you sign up online with BT you can put it in there.
You will be given a list of appointment dates, pick the one best for you and it's done.

Thanks! Got it instantly. To confirm I have no choice but to move back to rip off BT for my calls?

Thanks for everyone's' input, after working out the Cost of a 18 month contract with BT, I'll endure the tedious sky broadband and hope they jump aboard the FTTC ship!

There are other suppliers of fibre broadband. ADSL24 for instance.
I would not go back to Bt either, no matter how much faster I can get. I cope with 4megabits,

Thanks! Got it instantly. To confirm I have no choice but to move back to rip off BT for my calls? If you want Infinity, which is the BT Retail FTTC offering, then yes.
As has been said, there are several other FTTC providers, and you do not need a BT Retail phone line for those. You could probably even keep your Sky phone line, they would just revert it to a normal "BT Line", (Wholesale Line Rental).
For example, the Post Office is a monthly contract for the phone, and you could choose most of the ones on this spreadsheet to go on that or your Sky line. A few of those FTTC providers could also supply the phone line.

If you choose Rental Saver with BT, you don't pay £13/mo anymore. Just £120 once and you're sorted for a year (calculates at £10/mo). Just remember to make at least 2 calls per month (they could be inclusive) - otherwise there's a hidden charge.
I took the bundle (BT Infinity Option 2 + Unlimited Anytime Calls) + Rental Saver.
£28/mo, 18 month contract and 3 first months for Free.
Not so bad, in fact, for 37.5down and 8up. There is obviously a cap on this VDSL line - the engineer's tester shown 40000/10000 rock stable. The promise on Infinity site was 32/7. Virgin is on my street but won't go to my house. O2 did the best there is on my line, which was about 3.8/1... sucked to sit & wait for videos to download.
The Home Hub 3 is WiFi 802.11n enabled, has four ports of which one (No.4) is gigabit, the rest are fastethernet (100Mbps). All ports active, the local transfer speed is very decent.
Perks:
Email, Digital Vault (5GB), Automatic backup program, and security solution which is I guess based on McAfee -- free. Plus BT speedtester available which shows your BT profile.
I'm quite pleased with the product, especially taking into account that couple years ago I left BT for O2 due to BT's DLM being too harsh on my SNR margin.

The highest IP Profile is 38717kbps. So as long as you have that, your line isn't capped, or underperforming.
Re the BT speed test, that works on any BT Wholesale ISP. In other words everything except LLU. As there are no LLU FTTC providers yet, (although one poster is saying TT are now taking orders even though it isn't shown as available on their website), that includes any of the FTTC suppliers.

I have moved from Sky to BT because I have an underground cable problem, When it is raining I have terrible problems with my internet. With sky I used to moan because I only had 7megs instead of the 8 I was paying for. Sky couldn't sort out the underground cable without it costing a small fortune. Now I have moved back to BT. I am lucky to get enough to get on the internet at all. I have attached my signal tests. Please note most of the signal tests are taken using my modem plugged directly into the modem with a cat Rj45 cable. The other good results, with a different ip address are using my laptop wireless on my friends virginmedia account. So if I was you I would stay with Sky, there results were 7. something all the time day or night.
To correct the underground cable problem, an engineer needs to come when it is raining the engineer said or they find no fault and I will have to pay the £160 they said at BT. When my contract is up with BT I am going to use a pay as you go dongle instead because I can not have a full conversation on Skype. When it is really raining and has been for a couple of days i can not even get on the internet.

When my contract is up with BT I am going to use a pay as you go dongle instead because I can What made you think that moving from Sky to BT would sort out a cable problem?

With sky I used to moan because I only had 7megs instead of the 8 I was paying for. You were paying for up to 8 Megs! How on earth do you know whether your line was even capable of 8 Megs, even without the drips? You provide insufficient evidence to justify your moans.

joke is he was probably sync'd at the full 8 meg, just losing the normal amount due to network overheads and the odd bit of traffic.

And now has throttling on any P2P .
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
