Do BT Port Block on Infinity

Infinity became available today in our area so I was just wondering if BT block any ports on the Infinity Unlimited package? Also, is it possible to get more than a single static IP with BT Infinity, I have been using a /29 for 10 years, not keen on doing without it.

For static IP you need to use their business products, or choose another ISP

As for port blocks, there are none, just the traffic management

Yeah I just noticed the business package, for £40 + VAT they are currently offering Unlimited and a /29

All things considered it seems like a very attractive package and still comes with Free WiFi access to Openzone.

Anyone got any feedback on the Infinity Business package?

Aquiss prices too high?

Havent been an Aquiss customer for over 3 years but looking at their packages yes they are too high to compete with BT and don't offer unlimited.

Been with Vivaciti for 3 years, shame the FTTC policy is so screwed up that no-one can compete with BT (with the exception of Virgin) because I would have liked to stay with Vivaciti but for a reasonable amount of data in this day and age (with all the VoD and streaming services etc.) the costs of staying with Vivaciti would be astonimically high.

I don't like to use the big faceless corps but in the current economy I can't justify paying £100+ a month for my Internet service.

I've been on Infinity for Business with the unlimited option and block of static IPs since October. They give you a choice of a single static IP or a /29 block for £5. The block is better value if you don't mind the extra setup - and given you're already accustomed that's not likely to be a problem.

At ~500m from the cabinet it's giving full 40/10 sync. Overall very pleased with it; we use it for work and domestic use, and for big up/downloads and streaming it's a great improvement over the previous ~3.5 Mbit/s ADSL connection.

A general reply really to everyone, we get so many enquries where customers use less than 10GB a month and in many cases already syncing up a very reasonable speeds (ie: 12Mbps+) that it seems really unrequired at the moment to consider FTTx services. For many it cheaper and very practical to stay on an ADSL2+ service presently, with unlimited choices being far more available.

I am using approx 130GB per month at the moment purely through streaming (Sky Go, Netflix, Lovefilm, iPlayer, 4OD, 5 On Demand) and I do a -lot- of international travel so it would be nice to be able to access my media server to stream media when I am stuck in a hotel room on the other side of the world.

Also, I am concerned about my mobile comms so I want to route everything through a VPN/Secure proxy and having a 10mbit/s upload at home makes that viable (with the added advantage that I can still access VoD and Streaming services if I am proxied through my home IP).

So yes, there are significant advantages for me in switching to FTTC, that is before you even begin to consider my mail server and work projects.

Thanks for the feedback. We are about 200m from the cabinet so hopefully we will get a very good sync rate too.

I think given the cheap price, the BT Infinity Business package would be a very sensible move.

At 200m, you should also be good for 80/20 (or higher if it comes) speeds. I believe that will be launched in a couple of weeks, so perhaps you should check with them before signing on the dotted line.

It's not clear what will happen to Infinity pricing; they may charge more or, perhaps more likely, offer it at the same price with 40/10 prices reduced - pure speculation right now. It's also unclear whether existing customers will see the extra speed or have to pay for the upgrade, so at this stage for you, it's worth taking a little extra time to get the best deal (and let us know what you find).

This 80/20 is definitely coming? This is the first thing I have heard about it. Can you link me to some information on it?

Ooo I found a speedchecker on TalkTalk's site which suggests 69.5/20 and found information that 80/20 is due to launch around April 10th, which is great cos my MAC will last a month anyway and I just paid for my next month on ADSL2+.

Are you able to get rDNS on the /29 or do you have to stick with what BT sets them to? Obviously I would like my mail server to resolve appropriately.

I haven't got a personal domain name - I simply use the IP addresses from outside - but you can order a domain through BT or transfer your existing one to BT and manage it via the service management web. By default, the addresses reverse to hostXX-XX-XX-XX.in-addr.btopenworld.com.

For minor amusement (if you have privacy interests/concerns): the geolocation (at least on my block) of the static addresses is about 200 miles away, and the dynamic address assigned to the router is also about 120 miles away.

Also if you can get FTTC, Openreach announced that some point in 2013 that FTTP on Demand will be available, i.e. convert the FTTC to full fibre to the home.

You would have to pay a hefty setup fee ball park £500 to £1500 but for home work/business use it may make a lot of sense, as by 2013 FTTP should be available at 300 Meg down.

Thanks MrSaffron, I was aware of the FTTP situation (I read about it on TBB News iirc) and yes I would tend to agree the installation cost seems worth it for home office/business. It would allow me to get rid of my leased server so it would pay for itself in 10 months.

Really? You are away a lot, and would be able to set up adequate UPS and backup/restore facilities? Plus restarts if necessary? What about emergency BT engineer cover and access?

I have never had a home based server fail so yes where as there is a risk they could that risk is low and worth taking given the cost savings. Also if my current leased server goes down when I am travelling I probably wouldn't be able to get it dealt with until I return home anyway, as when I am away I am in meetings.
