If i choose to watch online only is there an activation charge and does it lock me into a 12 month contract?
I am on Infinity 2.
|
|
|
My understanding is that there is no charge (activation or otherwise), but that it does lock you in to a new 12 month contract. I'd be pleased if someone who has actually gone through the process can confirm that, though.

Moved (with trepidation turned relief) to BT Infinity 2 for upload speed. Happy BE user for several years.

Yes, I'm hesitant to even try and log on to the web (or download an app) as I do NOT want to risk extending my contract. (as I want to get away from the concept of subsidising sport with my broadband subscription).

No - watching BT Sport via an App or via your web browser does not require you to enter into a new minimum contract period. It actually says 'no need for new contract' on the order summary page before you press accept.
Read the 'legal stuff' here - the 12 month extension references only apply to BT TV viewing.

Until of course ISPs block it for copyright infringement, as they have done with First Row Sports.

Can't see it happening. I've yet to see anything supposedly blocked that I cannot still access. Most Vipbox streams are no more than links to Justin.tv or some Chinese site, where such practice is actively encouraged, along with fake goods.

That is neither news or vipbox, and judging by my browser, there is far more important things to concentrate on.

Neither was First Row Sports three weeks ago, so I'm surprised you think vipbox is immune from being blocked.

The contract side only kicks in if you want it on freeview or sky or bt tv.
Confusing as so many viewing options

And just to avoid confusion it is *not* available on Freeview.
There are DTT broadcast versions of these channels at LCN 57, 58 & 59 which are encrypted for viewing using a BT Vision+ box.
There are also the internet versions of these channels on the Youview EPG at LCN 507, 508 & 509 (510, 511 & 512 for the HD versions) for viewing from a Youview box (originally only those supplied by BT but since yesterday also available to retail Youview box users who have BT Ininity).
The other BT extra internet channels are also on the Youview EPG but there is as yet no process in place to subscribe to those and it is that I am waiting for.

Another question, if i have access to my own youview box does that avoid the activation and contract extension as the need to subsidise a box from bt is not there.
|
|
|
Interesting ... especially as I was flicking through channels last night, on Freeview, and Ch57 was NOT encrypted.

Just activated BT Sport on an account I manage for someone, and no indication of the web app needing a contract extension.
The stream quality is reasonable, and while the 400Kbps minimum mentioned in the bumpf has led some to suggest that is also the maximum speed, can confirm that on a reasonably fast connection (11 Mbps - ADSL2+ the stream was running at 3.5 Mbps.
Minimal buffering so was actually bursting on the connection to 7 Mbps and then a gap in download as buffer played out, rather than a constant 3.5 Mbps.

Yeh, looks like they are currently using 57 as a barker channel wth a promo loop to entice Freeview viewers on board. It was used on Thursday evening for the launch and was open to everyone.

The 12 month extension also applies if you view the BT Sports channels through SKY.
Just add BT Sport to the Sky Digital Satellite Platform for FREE on one Sky box.
This will start a new 12-month contract of your current BT Broadband package. If you've got a broadband special offer, you'll keep it on the same terms you originally agreed to - including when it ends. The basic price of BT broadband stays the same: and that's what you'll pay when any special offer stops.

I have signed up for BT Sport on sky but it asked for a viewing card number so I entered it and all is fine on the main TV and I chose the HD package so it costs £3 a month extra which I thought was a bit of a rip off as ESPN last year did not charge any extra to have ESPN HD over ESPN.
Then the biggest issue I think I have is that I will have to register the other sky viewing cards and then also select HD at £3 each per box??
I have three Sky HD Boxes so that would be £9 a month to watch them on each TV even though I would only ever have one box showing it!?!
Well so much for it being free for BT Broadband customers!!!
|
|
|
|
One box is free and HD was free up until August 1st. Multi-room isn't available so it's £12 a month plus £3 for HD plus a one-off £15 activation fee.

Thanks for the info, I wish it was still with ESPN then!

Noticed last night that Eurosport Player has been revamped and the streaming is of much better quality with hardly any stuttering although the audio on ES1 is borked at the moment. That means I may well not consider getting BT TV with the extra channels which includes Eurosport but renew my Eurosport Player sub next February at only £3 a month.
(only got it for the motorbike racing)

so how does one watch the web player.
I was beta testing the android app. I tried to follow the links from the main site for online player and ended up witth this after logging in.
We're sorry, our records show that there is an outstanding order on this line.
You can still order BT Sport on Sky here. You'll need your BT broadband account number to get BT Sport for free.
For any other queries, please contact one of our helpful advisors on 0800 731 0286 from 8am to 9pm Monday to Friday, from 8am to 8pm Saturday and from 9am to 6pm on Sundays.
But I think I followed a link to try to add it to my package (which is already added from beta).
So whats the url to login to web player?
found url now. works, bitrate is a fraction of the android player. But they using a good codec I guess as looks ok in browser.

After registering for BT Sports online go to:-
http://sport.bt.com/
Just login with your existing MyBT id.
I am finding that video and sound stutter to start with but give it a few seconds or a minute to settle down.

I too am on BT infinity 2. I have just tried to activate "FREE to infinity customers" BT sport on my PC, only to find a "one off" activation fee of £15.00. My understanding of "FREE" is "Without cost or payment". Am I wrong or is BT in the wrong?
|
|
|
As you go through the order process you should find the £15 fee offset by a £15 credit as an Infinity subscriber.

If its any help, Sport does work with Sky "Pay once. watch forever" card in the sky box.I registered the card number as a paid customer would and the channels came up very quickly, still free as a BT Broadband customer.
