Hi guys,
Today I finally got infinity installed after the engineer missing my appointment BT and openreach got me a engineer out in the afternoon .
Now Ive guessed my line is around 500-600m long but I have sync speeds of:
Downstream: 79478 kbps
Upstream: 19999 kbps
I know these will drop but the engineer said they wont drop too much... All in all very happy!

Im assuming you mean this?
Board version: 01
5. VDSL uptime: 0 days, 03:27:18
6. Data Rate: 19999 / 79478
7. Maximum Data Rate: 22153 / 79484
8. Noise Margin: 7.6 / 6.6
9. Line Attenuation: 0.0 / 20.3
10. Signal Attenuation: 0.0 / 0.0

And I have had battles with people in the past trying to convince me FTTC will not work at all beyond 300-400m

Haha well you won't hear that argument from me..
Still amazed at how my line is handling those speeds especially since my estimate was 60meg max

Nice mate, shouldn't much cross talk either. Doubt the cab will be busy anytime soon

You try upgrading the WiFi card.

Yea not too concerned about the wireless as dont use the laptop as much as I do the PC,
Yea I hope it stays fast as this lol

Yea not too concerned about the wireless as dont use the laptop as much as I do the PC,
Well I find that anything I use for wireless doesn't require full bandwidth anyway

You still using the Home Hub 5?

Yes

Possibly some TR069 management going on by BT. You can check in the event log.

What's that when it's at home lol

Remote Device Management by BT.

|
|
|
Does that have an adverse effect on my speeds then?
|
|
|
It shouldn't but initially there can be some tweaking for stability A bit like the 10 day period you used to have with ADSL. Also if you have any of the sport or tv services initialised they can tweak your QOS settings to allow for the proper amount of bandwidth when it is needed by these services which will of course affect your download speeds at the times those services are using it but otherwise should be invisible to the end user.
Edit; a few typos.

Thanks for that.. I still think the speeds are amazing given the length I am away from the cab
|
|
|
Your speeds are maybe a little better than expected. I am at 600m (measured cable length) from the cabinet and get 58/19 normally and have done for 2 years or so - except when it decides to give me 67/10 - yes I loose upstream and gain down.
If you are 500-600m, and getting 71/19 then that is pretty good - your original 79/19 was exceptional and I am not surprised it has fallen.

I'm around 700m from the cabinet by road- the cabling appears to mostly run along the pavement- and am currently getting an estimate between 60/19 and 80/20. Whenever I get my MAC code from BT, I'm hoping I get the former but either will be an upgrade from my current 2.5Mbps/448Kbps.

Edit; a few typos. Hi - new Engineer (Infinity 2) install here too about a couple of hours ago
Does this all mean the speed I have now is as fast as it will get and it doesn't get any faster? Estimated speed was about 56MB, and I'd say about 400 metres from the green box
Just done a test now
http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3724531448
This was with a LAN cable straight into the router
This is from helpdesk - I am 95% certain I have not reset anything, so not sure why #5 doesn't show more time
5. VDSL uptime: 0 days, 00:17:16
6. Data rate: 7846 / 40201
7. Maximum data rate: 8107 / 43324
8. Noise margin: 6.5 / 7.5
9. Line attenuation: 0.0 / 18.4
10. Signal attenuation: 0.0 / 16.8
Probably made the schoolboy error instead of location the router in the master socket, getting them to run a LAN cable to the computer room, but didn't want to be running computer off wireless (he did offer to move the master socket for me)
|
|
|
Personally I would say that is very low. I am about 400-450 m from the nearest cab and I get 76/20 and since an engineer visit a few weeks ago to fix a connection problem I am getting 76/19 solid.. Sure you are not on Infinity 1, though even then, I would expect to see your up speeds closer to 10 Mbps for I1.
Test it running the router directly in the master socket to see if it makes any difference as it could be some internal wiring problem is part of the issue with regards the low speed.
As to the up time that could be due to 'work' from their end or the line losing and then re-syncing as it settles down. But again, personally, if you are 400 or so from the cab I think that a very low speed for I2.
BTW, what does http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ say is your profile when you click the advanced button after the initial speed test..
Edit: typos and added last sentence.

FTTC starts off at its fastest possible speed and the DLM only intervenes to slow you down or add interleaving for error correction.

Probably made the schoolboy error instead of location the router in the master socket, getting them to run a LAN cable to the computer room, but didn't want to be running computer off wireless (he did offer to move the master socket for me) Openreach, Kelly's or Quinn's?
Is that a "Data Extension Cable" coming off the unfiltered connectors on the back of the interstitial plate?

Yep it will be, not coming out of the front of the socket - the top half of the master socket has been with an openreach branded socket as well as the main socket for the phone line
This goes to an uneventful looking socket where the router is plugged in (but read the next post)

Well well well, I measured exactly how far it is to the green box and in a straight line it is 250m and this is what is says
Download speedachieved during the test was - 37.73 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 31.13 Mbps-38.91 Mbps .
Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 38.91 Mbps
Logged into our BT, and under "my products" it says
My Broadband
Unlimited Broadband with BT Infinity 2
Included in your broadband package
- Unlimited usage
- Up to 76Mb download speed. Up to 19Mb upload speed
- Advanced anti-virus security
- Unlimited BT Wi-fi minutes
- 50GB BT Cloud storage
- BT Parental Controls
- BT Home Hub
And infinity 1 wouldn't need an engineer visit to come to our house would it?
(As for the reset time, I looked at some more of the logs, under "buttons", and it said I hit the reset button, which is perfectly feasible)
So thanks very much jcym for this, it has given me the proof I needed. Any good numbers to call to sort this out, or just BT chat?
|
|
|
Even assuming not a straight line to your cab, the usual is to multiply by root 2 to allow for it going round the houses a bit, so say @ 360-400 m you should still be getting pretty much the max capable from I2.
Start with chat as you can get a good one who knows what they were doing as I had an excellent one recently. After running some tests his end he immediately agreed there was a problem got me a much needed engineer visit who finally sorted a long standing problem with my connection so that I now have 76/19 24/7 and, as I said before, I am 400-450 m from my cab.
If you don't get a good one just be very persistent and insist they escalate the problem up the levels until you get someone who know what they are doing and not just reading from a script. The last fall back,if necessary, is email the CEO but i must admit I have had good.responses recently so either they are getting better or there is a tag on my account to treat carefully as I have been through the CEO route in the past.
P.S. yes I know you are supposed to have I2 but this is BT we are talking about and I know a number of people supposedly on I2 but due to a system screw up or exchange screw up they were actually on I1.
Edit: added P.S.

I tweeted them, they acknowledged, I filled in the online form, I doubt anything has been done with it yet as I have had not response from them, but my HH5 had a software update and reboot this morning, and my IP profile has increased by 10.56%
(IP Profile for your line is - 43.02 Mbps)
So if it goes up by that % every 2 days, it'll be about 78 Mbps in 12 days (or 14 days after the installation date), so *maybe* they are doing it that way for me

Apart from the auto-acknowledgement you get after sending the online form, I find it the slowest way to get a response but great for non-urgent queries as it can take days and they also appear to 'lose' online queries. Chat or telephone is the quickest but of the two I prefer chat as in my experience you seem to get a much better or more knowledgeable support person via chat but YMMV .
