HH5 through letter box? Nope!

[link to this post]

I got the email - your shiny new HH5 will be delivered on September 1st. There's no need to wait in as it will fit through the letter box. Got home - card on the mat asking me to collect it tomorrow from the main Post Office. The question is - how many HH5 owners got it through the letter box?

My Homehub 5 box (still unopened, but that is a long story) measures 4cm*18cm*45cm and it fitted through my letter box with no problems.

I'll measure the box tomorrow. It's definitely Royal Mail and not another company.

As always there are standards, but in decades past when I used to deliver papers I do remember a wide variation existing and some draft excluders smaller than the external opening

Fair enough, but luckily I'm off work tomorrow and can pick it up. Should they not say 'will fit through most letter-boxes?'. I had looked forward to playing with my new toy tonight but I'll probably be on here tomorrow asking for help. Is it really just connect up and surf, or can I expect hassle?

Yes I think it will have been sent using the "Royal Mail 48 hour service". I'd never heard of this guaranteed service before until I looked it up just now (and includes £50 compensation too)

If you're network's PCs are set to get IPs automatically from a DHCP server then once you have entered the username and password (anything but blank) to get the connection made between you and BT it is pretty much ready to go, or at least it was with the HH4. Even Wi-Fi is pretty straightforward using the wireless settings on the little card in the slot at the back of the router. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes to do it all. Of course you can go and tweak what you want to once up and running.

Maybe, if it warrants a complaint you could try ASA

Based upon that standard the HH5 will not fit through a letterbox. Luckily some of us have letterboxes that do not adhere to the standard.

I sometimes wonder if it's good for routers to be dropped on the floor via a letterbox. I know they're packaged in cardboard, but still.

Packaged in cardboard, but there's not much padding on the inside in case they land on a hard surface

I've just had one slight glitch over wifi here, but now I've looked through the menus on my HH5 it will be easy to resolve once I have proved it so, and it is this...

I keep getting momentary disconnects while playing certain games on one particular device, but I have noticed this is connecting on the 5GHz interface rather than the 2.4GHz one (Advanced -> Home Network -> Devices)

Under Advanced -> Wireless, I see that the 5GHz channel is set to automatic, so I could either keep that as manual channel, or force it on the 2.4GHz if I can

Other than that, it's been very smooth (apart from my line speed, but that's a different topic)

Oh I remember those days....it was always the ones who would order the broadsheets on a Sunday, that contained half a tree of extra magazines, that always had the small letterboxes.....and then would complain when you had to break the paper down, section by section, to get it out of the rain.

BT should post you an inflatable rubber mat (in a very small package) a day or so before it posts the HH5.

Installation instructions: inflate and place on floor below letterbox. Insulated, suitable for 220/110/12 volt supplies.

All up and running. The bloke in the sorting office said that they get a lot of HH5s that haven't been delivered by the postman. They are afraid of damaging the packaging, apparently, and don't go easily through the letter box because of the length.
Just a quick question - my HH5 has set itself a Homegroup and joined it. How can I get rid of that? I like the way the HH5 connects at different speeds depending on the type of wireless card available. I didn't know my old Dell could connect at 5GHz but it has. I like the Gigabit ports and the integrated modem. (My old white one looks a bit sad sitting on the wall with no green lights flashing. Progress, I suppose). I found my old frog modem the other day when I was having a clearout - those were the days!
