Plusnet - BT Broadband ?

[link to this post]

I'm out of contract on my existing Plusnet subscription. Have to say I've been very happy with them, never had any issues (apart from their suipplied Thomson router which has now died)

However the BT BB Black Friday offer seems too good to be true. For the same price as my existing Plusnet (after cashback) I could get BT Sport for free, a £100 Sainsbury voucher and a free BT Home Hub 5

Before I sign up, would appreciate any info; is there anything worse on BT BB (or missing)_ ? I believe BT BB is also truly unlimited downloads and no shaping. Do there block any ports ? Plusnet provide fixed IP for a one-off £5 charge.

Would appreciate any advice asap, as I have to signup today !

Thanks

I wouldnt move to BT if they blocked downloading. For example Usenet, Bittorrent, IRC, and any other p2p.

I'm confused by that thread about blocked websites - I'm assuming thats only for, extreme porn and other illegal such sites. Its not to do with copyright material ?

Several large ISPs have been forced to remove access to lots of sites accused of copyright infringement.

Just went through the thread and noticed that a BT customer complained that Warez-bb is blocked. I've just tried it on my existing Plusnet account and it seems fine.

I've neever used it but seems to be worrying, what else will BT block ?
I guess thats the advantage of a 'smaller' ISP, they are less likely to get hit with orders to block sites ? But how do I know what is blocked on BT ?!? I won't know until I migrate !

Anyone know if they block usenet, BitTorrent etc ?

Can you load http://thepiratebay.org/ on Plusnet?

Really strange, tried it 6 times, 3 times it got through and now its not !?!?

I guess the only to do would be to place the order tonight ( it expires tonight) and in the next couple of days take my laptop to mates place and see if/what is blocked. If it is blocked, can always cancel.

Anyway, know if they block usenet/irc/bittorent ?

Migrating from Plusnet Fibre to BT Infinity - I'm assuming the downtime should be minimal and the same speeds

Hi

I would run a mile from BT BB. I signed up to Plusnet a good 18 months ago and not long after, my daughter moved and I (foolishly) allowed her to take the Plusnet account a I was seduced by the 'free' BT Sport offer. I've never really watched much sport on BT and PL games are of course noon KO which isnt ideal. BUT Plusnet rocked, speed, and reliability-wise

more to the point, the BT Fibre service, I've found unreliable; the homeplugs supplied were worse than useless, and BT customer service told me that they'll never actually work correctly. The youview box supplied with the Infinity package was infinitely poor, and has been replaced, the replacement box doesnt seem to want to work with BT Fibre

Bizzare when both BT and PN are of the same DNA....Plusnet, I've been foolish, please, will you have me back

Should be yeah. Whichever FTTC ISP you choose you'll always be connected to Openreach's DSLAM, and BT Retail have plenty of bandwidth by all accounts.

I know what a proxy is. I was just pointing out that Plusnet isn't always averse to blocking, seemingly even without a court order.

Plusnets service does seem to be very good.

Can only count on BT Sport being free for the rest of this season. Thats 6 months and Although BT Sports free, there a charge for it in HD. The difference is narrowing.

The only real difference is £100 Sainsbury voucher and a free BT Home Hub 5. That or stay with what I know and its good.

billythetipdog - your problems all seem to be hardware related - homeplug, youview box - these arent applicable to me, but point taken about their customer service. I would at least expect the line to be the same in terms of reliability and speed. - How could it not be ?!?

I think you are being rather disingenuous in this thread Oliver frown. (For others, see my reply to him just now in another thread).

With luck the OP isn't actually bothered by the BT blocks, just doesn't like the principle.

Ok. But for that reason are you advising people not to join any of the other ISPs subject to the copyright court orders? Namely TalkTalk, Sky and Virgin Media? Kind of narrowing the choice a bit there.

That's a few less than you as a BT fan/Plusnet denigrator tongue.

Can you find any other sites inaccessible through Plusnet? The reason for that, and why the OP could access it sometimes but not always having been explained in the thread I linked to.

Well not so much a BT fan, it just it seems a little unfair to criticise the major ISPs for obeying the law.

And I sometimes suspect three post newbies who suddenly sign up and extol the virtues of an ISP to be existing TBB members wanting to appear to be someone new. But then I am a bit cynical like that. smile

I haven't look TBH. I'm only aware of TPB, and I'm not on Plusnet.

You have a good point about those others. (You missed EE). Strange that the question doesn't arise. (Genuine puzzlement).

However, in this thread I wasn't advising the OP against BT. He asked a specific question and I answered it. You presented a distorted view of his current ISP.

No. It's blocked locally by Plusnet.

But only blocked by DNS it seems.
As I posted on another thread, it can be reached perfectly well by using the IP address.

Despite the Court Order, EE are not blocking Warez BB but are blocking TPB. Maybe it's just a matter of time and the same could go for PN.

I would have thought that the Court Order covered the whole of BT, incl. PN.

This was debated for ages the last time there was a big hoohah about court orders. In the end Plusnet reps specifically stated the earlier BT Court Order did not apply to Plusnet.

No sites other than TPB, and that only occasionally, are blocked on Plusnet as a result of that, or almost certainly this, Court Order(s).

As I cannot prove a negative, I'll leave it to you to find one that is a subject of the two and is blocked by PN.

It is impossible for me to prove what is or is not blocked by PN. I can only confirm what is or is not blocked by EE.

Interestingly none of the 9 sites named in the recent BBC article about the recent Court Order are blocked by EE (yet!),
