New infinity 2 customer . Couple of questions

Hi everyone , got activated today so coming from normal adsl the first thing i done was a speed test. Results were 62mb download and 18 upload , was really impressed since was told on phone should get about 58 mbs. After the first hour and until now the speed has dropped to a steady 48 mb.

What i wanted to know is how do i find out what my line is capable of and what i should be getting . And will the speed fluctuate during certain times of the day .

Tbh id be pleased with 48mb if that is close to what i should expect and its been nice not hearing my son on his xbox screaming to his sister ' GET OF YOUTUBE !!!!'.

Any tests etc i could do to make sure im getting what i should or advice would be great , thanks

Run the BT Wholesale speed test, ignoring all the red instructions. We aren't actually bothered about the speed for this test.

At the bottom of the initial results page, click Further diagnostics. Enter the phone number when requested.

That will give a graph and two text boxes of results, plus a load of text garbage. Please just copy and paste here the full contents of the two results boxes - that's one down and one up.

We can calculate the downstream connection speed from that, to see if that has dropped or just the throughput.

Was this test done on a computer connected to the router via Ethernet? Or was it done wirelessly? Were there other devices connected to the router and using the internet at the time the speedtest was ran?

Your connection rate is around 70meg, so your line is performing as expected.

Line stats would be useful. The HH5 doesn't have great diagnostic reporting, but it has the basics of line sync speed, attenuation & noise margin. You can get to it via troubleshooting -> help desk router page.

That's what we wanted, and as the IP Profile was fine led to the wired/wireless question . Just for your information the sync calculated from the IP Profile is around 71Mbps. Depending on what error correction method is in use, i.e.with G.INP active or not, divide the IP Profile by 0.9669 (with) or 0.9679 (without). They give a result within a few kbps.

Edit - the same calculation cannot be done for the upstream. That is always the top value of the Openreach product.

Yeah wireless can be so inconsistent as there are so many variables. That said, even with 40+meg wireless there isn't anything you're not going to be able to do.

Aha! So we have a simple method of determining whether G.INP is active on a connection or not

By plugging my latest IP Profile and sync speed into the RobertoS formula, I have IP Profile of 73100 divided by sync speed 75524 giving 0.9679 (without)

Credit where credit's due, IIRC it was WWWombat who spotted that very soon after G.INP was introduced. (To be precise, the converse calculation).
