So unsurprisingly the SmartHub is junk.
The interface is a slow and lacking simple things such as Reboot, seems they spent more time on ugly icons than actually testing stuff.
Dynamic DNS updating doesnt work (At least with NoIP) ...(Seems it might actually work)
let alone the over charging for Post n Packing....
2nd Class tracked is not £6.95 even for retail customers.
Going back to HH5 and returning the SimpleHub.

There is an option that says "Restart the Smart Hub" on the main interface page for rebooting the hub

I feel I'm the only one that's not having any problem
Interface is snappy.

Once it gets settled in its seems to work OK...
Have you separated the WiFi bands?
|
|
|
Yep, DynDNS didn't work for me either...
Also seemed that Dynamic DNS was causing the hub to reboot and crash... though not confirmed.
|
|
|
Also, wasn't postage cost like £7.95/£8
Mine was sent my 24 Hour Tracked... not sure why yous came via 2nd class...
Either way them charging a little extra over the retail postage is fine... someones got to package and post it haven't they...

It's fast for me. It HAS got an option to restart the hub. NOiP also works fine for me.
Seems you got a dodgy box!!

Just installed my new "Smarthub".
It seems it's not so smart.
Download speed before on my HH5 was 58.08Mbps.
Now on my new Smarthub it's 54.59Mbps
Gutted. I'll give it a few days to see if it recovers otherwise it's going on eBay.
|
|
|
I'd definitely give it a few days. Mine seems to have done the opposite. Download before Smart Hub was about 55Mbps, now it's consistently at 59Mbps.
Seems the Smart Hub isn't consistent with people reporting lower and higher speeds and also better and worse WiFi signal than before.
I've generally had a good experience so far though.

If you don't manually cause a re-sync in those few days it will not change in either direction from what it is now. Do it well inside daylight hours, and not if there are thundery showers within miles.

Wi-Fi is definitely slower.
My wife has really got the ache.
I've tried different channels without any noticeable difference.
I had this delivered 2/3 weeks ago and put off installing it as a suspected it might be trouble.
I hope it sorts itself out before I get it in the neck.
Needless to say I'm getting "I don't know why you had to change it in the first place"

Hahaha women just don't understand these things

Yes
i have but i didn't have any problem before not separating them.

I have but I didn't have any problem before not separating them.
Some might not, depends on the what devices are using what band really.
My issues when the bands where together was mobile devices picking up 2G signal before the 5G signal on return to coverage (home) and then getting stuck on that network with it constantly dropping every few minutes.
Some mobile devices prefer to stay on 2G WiFi too, I assume this is for battery reserving.
Since I've now got all my devices on 5Ghz and only a couple on 2.4Ghz (which don''t stay connected long) I don't really have WiFi issues... just issues with the damned hub crashing.

The only issue I have is DHCP allocates IP addresses terribly.
It often allocates two devices the same IP, so one of them works and the other just displays IP address conflict messages. The only fix I have found is to reset the hub when it does this. You can see in the address table DHCP has allocated the devices same IP.
Otherwise I have had no drops on 2.4 or 5ghz.
Your behaviour is normal, 2.4Ghz has a higher signal than 5Ghz and devices connect into whatever wifi band has the best reception generally. This means 2.4 gets used by almost all devices with devices into going onto 5ghz when in the same room.
Band steering should have fixed this, what it does is blocks devices it knows are dual band from connecting into the 2.4ghz network, it physically says no to them connecting in at 2.4ghz until they fall into 5ghz. BT disabled this feature though - which honestly was the main reason for me getting the smart hub. So back to split ssids

Yes and annoyingly with split SSIDs it puts a -5 on the end for the 5ghz channel which is ridiculous!
I have the same SSID set up across two houses and now I can't because it has added the -5 on the end!

Yes I mentioned this on my review as an issue. I also do not like how they have stopped us using any DFS channels.

I have
2 laptops
1 on 2.4ghz
1 on 5ghz
2 mobiles both on 5ghz
1 chromecast on 5ghz
and my tv in the bedroom and desktop on ethernet
not seen anything affecting my performance.

Agreed it sounds to me like mlmclaren has a faulty device.
My house is as follows
2.4Ghz
PS4
2 android phones
A wireless printer
A smart TV
Windows laptop
We are always streaming 1080P on the smart TV and ps4 without any drop outs what so ever.
5Ghz
Sky HD Box
4 iPhones
7 laptops, a mix of OSX, Windows 7 and 8, 10 work and personal laptops
iPad x 2
Amazon kindle
Apple TV 3rd gen
Not had any drop outs on any device using the smart hub. Signal and range is better than ever and actually since a firmware upgrade appears to be beating my HG635 which initially was the winner.

I only find issues on 2G to affect 'some' mobile devices, mainly those that 'try' to stay connected to the WiFi during sleep...
Maybe its something to do with devices trying to use less power for WiFi whilst sleeping...
Beside's it's impossible to try comparing 2G wifi to other users... some may live in the middle of nowhere where they have all the spectrum they could ever need, myself and many other live in urban area's where neighbors WiFi frequently take part in the battle for the evenings broadcasting.
All I can say is I never had these problems with other 2G devices... also could it be something to do with the new filters installed in the devices or maybe something to do with the spectrum 4G from some networks could be broadcasting on...
I know the EE mast not to far away from me is pumping out 4G+ (LTE-A) at 2600mhz... and living in the center of town, I'm sure Vodafone may be also pumping out the equivalent.
I got BT's new Hub development team working with me on the issues anyway, so waiting for them to come back too me.

I have a four storey set of flats next door to me with around 32 wireless networks detected by my MacBook at 2.4Ghz.
I don't think the issues are due to being in an urban area as you're suggesting.
I also have a phone mast 150m away broadcasting 4G Vodafone, 3 and O2. I actually get full 4G or 4/5 bars in my home on these networks.
I have devices set to keep the wireless always on during sleep.
I'm interested in replicating the issues, mainly for personal interest, what devices have the problems? Chances are I either own the device or have one at work / know someone with that device.
What exactly are you seeing? Just wireless being dropped regularly?
It could be a faulty unit you have as well.

I actually think the -5 issue is a big deal. Especially if they release this for businesses which I'm sure they will. You can't just have the hub putting random letters on the end of an SSID you define. Because it doesn't know what other access points you may have already in the system. It's a shame there's no direct way of giving feedback to the hubs and devices team who design these things.

I'm starting to think I might have a bad nit of hardware too, maybe part of a bad batch....
I've popped a message over to the guys handling my case and asked if they will arrange a new hub.
RE: Wireless/Spectrum
Just because their's 4G networks near you don't mean they are broadcasting at 2600mhz.... actually out of the networks you've shared, only Vodafone has rights to broadcadt a 2600mhz which is closest to 2.4Ghz wifi... and EE only seem to be activated 2600Mhz in selected central locations at the moment.
I don't live next to an apartment building, I live in it and across from me is a bunch of offices .. (a quick scan shows 34 networks on 2.4Ghz band) though those are just SSID's so you can drop that down by at least 10-15 easy...

I also do have 4GEE, that's what I use personally. Only 3 bars out of 5 in my home. It is double speed EE though. I was just explaining what is broadcast from the closest phone mast. Not sure where EE comes from. Could be the same mast, but not shown on the ofcom sitefinder (which is outdated).
You did not mention which devices are having the issues?
|
|
|
You might be aware that double speed is most often just 20mhz at 1800mhz.
Also devices are iPhone's an Xiaomi Mi 5 and an Oppo F1.

When I first set up my smarthub I got a warning about password strength and ignored it. It was very slow and part of the interface didn't work properly. I also remember seeing a warning about using the same password as on the BT site.
I then factory reset it and entered a new stronger password and everything has been fine since.

I am on band 3, so not 1800 yes. Just checked.
I have an iPad and iPhone, not tried them on 2.4Ghz much but will forget 5Ghz network and see if anything seems a miss.
