BT wifi fon

Bt has for some reason switched on fon on my smart hub 6. I am unable to turn it off as I cannot log on to the BT wifi page. This is apparently a common problem for people who did not sign up to BT email when joining BT for internet services. I have tried changing the password to no avail.
Does anyone know how to switch fon off from the hub to get around the logging in problem or using the dreaded BT phone support services?

Why do you want to turn it off? It is not much of a problem for a user. Occasionally a small amount of bandwidth is used but tat is all.

I stay next to a campsite that can have 50 or so there on holiday and they all want wifi access and some will climb into your garden to get it.

There are two different places to disable BT Wifi on their website. The BT Wifi area in My BT doesn't need a btinternet email address to access. You are probably trying to access the old page for very old customers.

That's the old one for customers signing up before Sep 2013. I'm not on BT now but I believe there's a BT Wifi "button" at the bottom of My BT (unless they changed it).

Login and click MyBT button

Find the Manage My Extras button below bill summary click it
A list of 7 icons (the extras and BT Wifi should there - number 5) and click the BT WiFi one
Page will scroll and show BT WiFi is active, then click Manage my BT WiFi
Scroll down to bottom of page and there should be a Opt out of BT WiFi accordion, click it
You should now see an Opt out of BT WiFi button

Thank you Mr Saffron for the information and I have followed your instructions. I am a little confused as it says wifi inactive.
My smart hub is showing wifi active which it did not before and having spoken to BT they tell me my wifi is active but will switch off within 28 days. The reason that BT give for the fact that wifi is active is that when a new smart hub is installed this is the configuration that it will set up with despite my refusing this option when I signed up with BT, they however assure me that it will switch off within 28 days.

The help notes do indicate that this can take a couple of days to filter through all the systems, i.e. there is not a direct link between that button and your home hub

I will continue to monitor the situation and if after a week my Smart Hub is still showing that wifi is active I will try the BT chat service again and see what response I get.

The nuisance factor I can now understand however it does not matter if there is one or fifty users on there -- the max bandwidth is the same and shared between them all.

Maybe you should get a couple of spare WAPs, power them up, but not connected, leave security off and give them "interesting" names. I could suggest some but MrS would probably delete the post! Or maybe name one - Free WiFi at the Kings Head (or similar).

If you turn it on and off, within around 48 hours BT will send a push to your home hub to turn it off.

Back when I was on ADSL2+ with a very low speed we needed as much as possible, I just phone BT and asked for it to be disabled and explained why, they was very happy to disable BT FON (I think it was called back then) and within 5 mins while still on the phone the Hub4 did a reboot and it was disabled.

Now when my Smart Hub arrived it was enabled for about an hour where it then updated to say its off.

So to save all the hassle of digging through all the online pages, just phone and ask for it to be disabled.

Word of warning, if you have it disabled you will also not be able to use BT's Wi-Fi Hot Spots, so just a heads up.

I don't go out due to health reasons, so loosing access to BT's Wi-Fi Hot Spots didn't worry me.

I think that's incorrect. Using BT wifi is not conditional on broadcasting it on your router

True, but it does require you to have it enabled in MyBT. I could enable it in MyBT, and then buy my own router, BT would have no way to force my router to broadcast the SSID but keep my access enabled.

AFAIK if you have a homehub & BT WiFi disabled in MYBT you wont get access.

According to BT it does:

If you opt out you will lose the benefit of unlimited Wi-Fi usage from BT Wi-fi hotspots.


I opted out but do continue to get access because I am an EE customer so get WiFi access for free through them.

I know years ago when I opted out it stopped working - it is possible they have changed that but if so then their FAQs have not kept up to date.
