I will try and explain. My other half (whose not too techncal savvy) wants to sign up to BT home essentials. Now I think she's confused (or I am)! She seems certain that if you say use the connection on more than a few devices say phones laptops playstations whatever BT will not let you connect to more than 3 I do know a bit about broadband and wifi would seem very strange if BT did that or am I wrong?

It does sound a little odd and there is nothing I have seen in the Ts&Cs that covers it.
You do have to meet one or more of the criteria set down - JSA, UC, Income Support, Pension Credit &c
Do either of you "work from home"?

Long distance relationship (She can't work due to disabilities) she has it set in stone and convinced if she uses more than a few things i.e. smart TV laptop mobile her brother's playstation they won't let her connect to anything else. She even said she spoke to a guy from BT on the "Chat" who apparently said the same thing. I am bewildered

I dm'd her on facebook both links. She defo has it set in stone there's a 3 device limit lol trying to hell her otherwise it like talking to a brickwall ha

I'm on BT Home Essentials and can assure you there is no device/speed/use limit.
Plus if you need it you get all calls from your landline free including to mobile numbers.

So basically she could connect all the phones/laptops whatever for mother of sundays to her hearts content and she won't be cut off at just 3?
|
|

I can assure you that's not the case, I am a Home Essentials user and currently have 17 devices connected.

That is correct.
Tell her to stop worrying and enjoy.

That is pretty much what I thought. I spent a hour trying to convince her not to go by what some random guy on the BT chat said to her but she was convinced lol

Is she perhaps getting confused with this?

I think she was dead set because on the essentials page it said 3 devices in HD she not too savvy on this that and of course she believed her sister's husband too who thinks he's always correct...............

There is a low limit (but I think it is four rather than three) on the number of mobile devices you can connect to their BT TV/Sport services. Could this be a source of the confusion?

Hi,
Is she, maybe, getting confused with a mobile hotspot provided by her mobile phone? On most mobiles there is the ability to have a "mobile" hotspot that does have a limit on the number of devices that can be connected to it (usually a max of 8).
HTH,

I suspect they were reading something that said how many simultaneous HD streams would be possible on the bandwidth available. That is not a limit on number of devices but possibly a guide on how much bandwidth different services require.

I's all sorted. She has been assured of the truly no device limit on the scheme and she was apparently told (this is someone coming from head office) she was told they advertise device limits as they don't want people signing up to the scheme as it's costing them too much. But she's been assured she's happy all's well that ends well

100% no limit.
Imagine if there was and somebody gifted a 4 pack of smart bulbs for Christmas. Customers would be flooding the support line as soon as it reopens saying “my internet doesn’t work” as no device they’re trying to use would connect. The cost of call centre staffs time would make it quite expensive quite quickly for them to administer.
Also, if the buy a wifi booster it would occupy one of the device slots (common in single story flats where they’re not “huge” but 3 or so walls front to back)
Most homes have a tv. Even if not for live tv for a monitor or streaming. I bet most are smart… 3 devices would in generally be unusable and unworkable. Many, have 3 devices connected 247 just by having a tv a wifi extender and maybe an Alexa.

That's absolute nonsense. I really don't know why people make up stuff like that.
They advertise the average/rough number of devices each package speed should be good for.
They advertise the same average number of devices for the essentials package as they do for the equivalent fully priced package.
They advertise a higher number of devices for the faster essentials package, which again matches the equivalent fully priced package.
There's nothing unique about the Essentials package advertising that is designed to put people off "because it is costing them too much".
