Why did BT lie about my line capabilities?

[link to this post]

Just wondering why BT would lie about the capability of my line, even when I went as far as the chairman executive's office? They told me at first my line was capable of 5.5mbps, then when I went max they said it could go no faster than 2mbps.

3 months later, and dead line due to the bad weather which was fixed I get 5.5mbps, my profile is unstuck and no FUP in place.

I just went to the bt broadband site and this is what it says:

In reply to:

Check availability - results
For Telephone Number 01634710899 on Exchange STROOD

Our initial test on your phone line indicates that you should be able to have BT Total Broadband with a likely maximum speed of up to 2Mb (Megabits per second).

Please note that this speed is only an estimate based on information available to us about the length of your phone line. Your actual speed will additionally depend on factors within your home, principally the length and quality of any internal phone wiring, and the speed of your computer and modem or router.

This is my line stats:

DSL Connection

Link Information

Uptime: 0 days, 1:05:06

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 7,008
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 12.68 / 174.26
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11.5 / 19.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 28.0 / 47.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 23.0 / 6.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ALCB
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 2 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 10,866
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 424
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 412

Recent speed test result:

The only reason for a short connection time is I just removed the ring wire. That actually lowered my FEC errors from in the millions, to the low 10,000's which is a huge difference.

Just seems to me that BT are a totally incompetent company and a bunch of liars!

I am sorry here but what is your point, you are currently syncing at just over 7Mb. Bt said 5.5Mb as a conservative estimate otherwise customers would complain in their thousands that they are not getting the speed promised.

Also the speed estimates are provided by BT Wholesale who are a separate company from BT Retail who supply the total broadband product.

The throughput is again an issue for BT Wholesale with exchange congestion again BT Retail can do nothing about it due to the fact you are getting speeds faster than the minimum product specification states.

Just I have completely missed the point in your post at all.

I don't find you offensive I just failed to miss the point in your OP. It just fail to see the significant point in your post. We have established that your BRAS profile has now been un stuck so I think their is not much more can be said about it than that.

I'm having a similar problem, just moved house, got my line activated by BT and then ordered Broadband on it. The BT speed test was telling me I'd get 5.5mbps, but now, after a week on BT Broadband, when I run the line speed checker it says my line will support speeds of up to 2.0mbps!

Has my line been downgraded? Is my profile stuck?

My speeds are TERRIBLE on every speedtest, download test, ping test, you name it.

You will have to post your router stats so that I can look into it further, what router do you have?

A Netgear D834g.

There's nothing unusual about my stats though, at least nothing I can see... the SNR and attenuation are normal

Modem
ADSL Firmware Version 4.01.02.00
Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 8128 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps
VPI 0
VCI 38

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 19 db 5 db
Noise Margin 12 db 23 db

what else do you need to know?

(cheers for the help, btw!)

oh, and this is the kind of blistering speeds I'm dealing with!

wooooooo... greased lightning!!

why would BT's line checker tell me 5.5mbps max one week and then 2.0mbps the next?

The speedchecker is not run by BT Retail but by BT Wholesale, all other ISP's feed off it. So they would have all told you the same thing.

Your router is a good router, your synced at 8128 the highest you can get. I think it is a stuck bras, do a speedtest using the BT speedtester and post what you get.
