It's activation day....

Today (Thur 8 Mar) is activation day. Bye-bye TalkTalk, hello BT. The router has arrived, so has the phone.

Connection is still working on TalkTalk. Do I wait for the TalkTalk service to stop working before connecting the BT Hub. Or do I need to connect the BT hub to start the process of the switch over from TT to BT?

Secondly, I need some advise about connecting up my PC. Having unpacked the hub I discovered it only has two ethernet ports on the back of it (despite the website saying the hub supports 10 machines). I have 3 machines (I need to connect at 100Mb speed because of the size of datafiles transferred between them - wireless just isn't quick enough) - any suggestions on how to connect the third machine? I 've got a linksys gateway which I currently use with TT but I'm not sure how to configure this as a simple "switch box" Any suggestions?

Well you could just wait for you talk talk connection to stop working, migrations usually take place during the early hours of the morning.

I know somebody who is just going onto talk talk they were told back in January that they would have to wait 5 weeks for broadband, they got a call on Monday when it should have been activated telling him it would now be the 16th.

As for your linksys router I have one as well(WAG354G) I went into the main menu(http://192.168.1.1) logged in and then at the top where it says PPoA I changed it to bridged mode, but I would switch off wireless(If you have it) before changing into bridged mode as the only way to get it back out is to factory reset. It seemed to work well.

Waiting for TalkTalk to stop working was what I was thinking of doing.... however given TT's track record I wouldn't be surprised if they just kept supplying the service and charging me! (Can you guess I don't trust them?). I'll leave it a day and see what happens.

PS Please, please warn your friend against TalkTalk.... if they still have the chance to back out they should do so. The service I've recieved has been terrible.

This can't be right....can it? I've just recieved notification from BT that my Broadband is active.... BUT I'm still connected to the internet via ADSL from TalkTalk. How can the connection be active?

Do I need to contact TalkTalk and get them to turn off at their end before or something? Or does plugging in the BT Hub do that?

Try the hub and see what happens. Often you can login to both services during migration.

I appear to be up and running on BT with only 1hr of downtime. (Surely it can't be this easy???).

What I discovered is that although I was on-line with TalkTalk, following a reboot of the old router I was no-longer able to connect to TT.

Installed the BT Hub, wait one hour as in the documentation, connect PC and it is all working. I haven't needed to insert the BT CD or anything.... it just works! (~6M download). What does surprise me, however, is that I've not had to supply my username/password. Is that normal?

Username not being supplied is normal, you will have agreed a main account e-mail address when you ordered broadband from BT. If the home hub is working and plugged in go to: http://www.dslzoneuk.net/ip_checker.php and see what it says your ISP is.

Yes downtime is not much, as little as 30 seconds from experience.

My friend cannot get out of his contract with Talk talk as they will now be supplying it on the 16th. I have said to him that if he has any trouble what so ever in the first 30 days to leave.

Yes the hub is preconfigured to work on BT Broadband, there is no password required.

leaving Newnet tonight after 15 months with them,nothing wrong with speeds but things have changed since the increase in subs over the xmas holidays no forum chit chat etc .looking at the previous posts i hope that everthing is straight forward for me when i go live with BT tomorrow sometime.

Should be morning and in theory should be done in under 30 minutes. Easy peasy.
