Getting around the http throttle.

Hey all.

I too have been suffering from port 80 being throttled, BT deny all knowledge of such throttling, and I'm not a heavy user. I have however, found that using a proxy to tunnel request through port 8080 (maybe others will work too) to yield correct, uncapped speeds.

Just had a quick go using platon.ee.duth.gr:8080.

So, anyone know of any good UK based proxies?

Don't recommend using those though , VERY VERY slow...

You may find you need to change ports around (and use an SSL tunnel to the proxy server) depending on the time of day, day of the week, etc. BT seem to randomly throttle traffic on other ports - some days I can get uncapped speeds on a port/application during peak times other times I can't...

I use my own dedicated server as a proxy with an SSL tunnel via putty/ssh to get around the throttling... I don't mind traffic management at peak times - but I do mind traffic management to the point where webpages stall or take as long to load as on dialup and interrupt any video/music stream I might have playing, not to mention the inability to play/stream some movies/music in realtime during peak times - which should be perfectly able to stream even on a 0.5Mbit connection...

Try running the speedtest on this site, one with port 80 option on, and one with it off. Port 80 you will get 40kB/s, with it off your using a different port number and it should run as fast as your connection allows.

Been told its congestion, I'd like to know what idiot in BT decided that each of the 131,070 ports on a computer needs its own path through their network. Think of all the wasted fibre BT are running!!

ok guys im not sure how you tunnel and set up proxy etc. Can someone explain this to a noob like myself cause i would love to download without being throttled.

You don't really want to go tunnelling traffic via a proxy. If you don't know how to set one up best to leave it alone.

OK i have just signed up to bt total broadband, and am on day 2 of the "line Training". my throughput is configured at 2000kbps, which ain't bad, as I am 6.7 km from the exchange.
I ried the speed test on port 80... 240kbps standard 1865 kbps. How the hell can bt throttle my connection, when I have only signed on, and am meant to be an unlimited customer
