Bad pings in Counter Strike

[link to this post]

Hi,

Please can anyone assist?
Since moving to BT and having a nightmare trying to get them to reset my IP profile (which as been done but took 2 months) I have today tried CS and I'm getting a bad ping rate (~40+) and I get regular pauses which stops the game and then it comes to life again after a second.

This repeats on all servers I've tried so far...

Anyone if there is a fix or do I have to suffer the same fate as last time and ring Technical Support...Sheesh if they didnt understand IP Profile what hope have I got with them helping with Ping times...

Whats this about interleaving...Perhaps that needs to be turned off...or on.....

Why did I leave Eclipse again ???

More to the point....Why did you go to an ISP with a 12 month contract, if performance (pings) are so important?
I know it's fine to be wise after the event, but sometimes it's worth paying just that little bit more.

Anyone if there is a fix

I doubt it, if BT are messing about with throttling and pings suffer as a result (although 40ms isn't too bad, there are a lot worse off than you), I doubt there's much you can do, except wait out your contract at go to an ISP that doesn't traffic shape or let pings get to out of control.

Whats this about interleaving

On long lines, or those experiencing a lot of errors (or any AOL connection), Interleaving is used to assist the router/modem with error correction.
Put simply, it shuffles the bit order on the way out of the exchange, so when it gets sorted back into order in your router, two adjacent bits are unlikely to both have errors.
Thus, the router can often correct the error without having to ask for the packet to be sent again.
The side effect of interleaving, is it does add a little to your pings (anywhere from 8ms upwards, depending upon the level of interleaving applied - mine increases pings by around 16-20ms, to 30ms to most UK servers).
You can ask for interleaving to be turned on (good luck with finding a 1st level support person that even knows what it is ), but it may increase the number of CRC errors to the extent that speed drops, because so many packets have to be re-transmitted.

Sounds like interleaving has been enabled due to some line instability. call technical help and request it gets removed my pings are ~40 but when interleaving off its normal for me to get 12-16ms to jolt and the BBC.

As for throttling I am not aware of it causing any issues with pings.

You on a wireless connection?

I had a decent ping on most games according to the ping counter, but i got lots of pauses just like you did.

Turned out it was my wireless lan that was the problem, even though i had great signal and could download at decent speeds, i used to get a lot of jitter and some packetloss which is what fouled up FPS gaming.

Switched my desktop computer from wireless to powerline networking and now i don't get that problem.

If you are using wireless, have a google about turning off wireless zero configuration, that has been known to cause lag every 60 seconds or so.

Thanks ALL!!!

For info, I am not on wireless and my PC does not have any wireless devices installed.

I will log a call for interleaving to get turned off and see how that goes....

I'll do a tracert too..cheers,

And

I left Eclipse cos their support was appaling and my speeds for general browsing were almost 512k!
I live 640 meters from the exchange and I am now on BT business option 2. This is paid for by work, hence the move.

I do get a stonking good download rate now my bRAS profile has been sorted. Just need to get the pings down which is why I mentioned Interleaving.

As for line quality my stats are :-

Noise Margin +25 up and +16 down
Attenuation +17 up and +23 down

An I am getting a bRAS profile of 6000k consistantly now.....

So a very clean line.

Cheers for the replies.

Chris

Becuase interleaving is used to correct errors on the line, its possible that with it off your sync speed may be lower.

However your ping should be better.

Turning interleaving off living 600meters from the exchange it is very unlikely it will lower your speed in fact it may increase it as interleaving cannot run at 8meg but rather around 6-7 I have forgotten the exact figure.
