First bit of pingable BT network

[link to this post]

Anyone tell me the first pingable gateway or router on a BT Business account (or failing that a normal account). A traceroute perhaps ?

I'm trying to diagnose a connection that has no TCP/IP traffic but will get DNS lookups resolved ie ping www.bt.com is turned into ping 217.32.165.146 but it doesn't go anywhere.

The DNS servers don't appear to respond to pings anyway.

If you run a pathping from a machine connected to the business connection you will get your answer.

I believe most hops should be pingable but be wary of any hops that are 100% losing packets as they are most likely just not pingable, all is well if it just continues on the route.

could you post a tracert or pathping or is it just failing immediately after the first hop? If it is failing on the first hop I would suggest it might be the router.

Well it depends the BT Wholesale network starts 217 and BT's core network is the ones with rev dns lookups aka the router name.

bt.com does not respond to ICMP packets nor do some routers so they can concentrate on moving real traffic rather than responding to pings all the time.

the only thing that works (so far) is DNS lookup, hence I wanted to ping either the default gateway or the DNS server as I know I must have connectivity to both of them to get the DNS resolve.

Someone has pointed out that the DNS lookup is UDP so maybe I have a TCP/IP problem.

Hop 2 is the RAS / Gateway / PoP
BT give ICMP low prioritisation on most of their network.

Firewall problem?

thanks for that. No 3rd party firewalls on two machines neither would connect to web or email or ping bbc.co.uk
