Home Hub problems

[link to this post]

Hi,

I have a regularly occurring (several times a week) problem with my BT Home Hub.

What happens is I stop being able to connect to websites. Firefox gives an "Address Not Found" error, IE7 gives a "cannot display the webpage" error, "ping www.google.com" gives "Ping request could not find host www.google.com" other apps give similar errors. However, my BitTorrent client keeps downloading regardless (confirmed both in the client itself and in Task Manager). I can also connect to the Home Hub's admin page just fine via 192.168.1.254.

Once the problem has occurred if I try to do "ipconfig /renew" I get "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.", likewise if I try to connect via WiFi it shows a signal but stalls at "Aquiring network address".

The Home Hub itself continues to show the standard four green lights (Power, Broadband, Wireless, Phone) as usual. To resolve the problem I have to turn off the Home Hub and then power it on again.

So it seems that both DNS and DHCP die but otherwise the connection still works. I've had this occur on two different Home Hubs using various clients (XP SP2, Vista SP1, Windows Mobile 2003 SE) connected both via Ethernet and WiFi. Has anyone got any ideas what could cause this or any tips for troubleshooting the problem?

Thanks.

Its a bug with the firmware, if you empty the logs every so often it seems to reduce this problem.

Yup clear the intrusion detection logs frequently or even just when this happens and the problem goes away.

Interesting. Am I right in thinking this a "new shape" homehub?

When it happens, do as Paul said. Go to the routers interface using the IP address, and clear the intrusion detection logs.

Thanks Bryer and paul, I'll try that.

Do you know if this is something BT plan to fix or is that a stupid question?

It looks like this one:

That's a "new shape" one.

Do let us know if clearing the IDS logs fixes this for you. (it should)

I should imagine so, it is such a simple fix all they need to do is tell the hub after 100 log entries to clear or however many it takes before it locks up.

Think BT are having some trouble reproducing this in their "labs" though.

Hi Paul.

As you know I've had this DNS problem before now, and once 6.2.6.E arrived I've never had it since, including throwing tens of GB through the router to stress test it.

Just wondering if the "old" and "new" hardware have marginally different firmware...
