new user - homehub comes pre-configured?

[link to this post]

Hi

Going to help someone set up their homehiub tomorrow (new bt broadband subscriber) - just wondering if the router comes pre-configured with user/pass, so only need to plug the ethernet in and surf - avoiding all the [censored] they used to include with the install cd.

thanks
joe

Avoid the CD, and the USB connection.

Power up the Router.
Wait for the Broadband and Internet lights to go solid green.
Plug in an Ethernet cable.
Power up PC
Set up the PC to use DHCP.

<ramsay> DONE </ramsay>

Hi

Installation was nice and straight forward as predicted (thanks), and email set up without trouble in OE. One thing thiough, the speed was pretty dire - do Bt still use that 10 day(?) training period with the line on new connections, that they used to? - its an 'upto 8meg' service she's paying for, and with distance from exchange, i imagine she should get between 4 and 5meg (after it has settled)

In that case you're back to the old mantra of,

Filter everything. EVERYTHING. Sky box, every phone, etc.

90% of speed problems turn out to be the premises wiring. Disconnect all the extension wiring by removing the lower half of the master socket, and try the router there. Big speed jump = dodgy internal wiring.

If you can, position the router at the master socket and use a filtered faceplate.

The 10-day period makes no difference to the actual speed received, it's mainly to do with setting the fault thesholds. You will also find that no action on reports of poor speed will be taken inside this 10-day period.

Check the extension wiring...

Don't worry. When I first got BT broadband(I switched in January) the speeds were terrible for the first week.

The line should sort itself out after 10 days.
