BT Outage today 17/7/08

I went to use my connection today only to find I was unable to get online. I called the useless tech support who went through the usual dril and told me that the fault was at the exchange or at my house and would require an engineer visit. I did try to explain that my router was reporting a connection of 4678kbps but was unable to authenticate

Anyway, as a workaround I tried setting the router to "get DNS automatically" and hey presto its working. I called back and was told i wouldnt be able to get online because of a major outage. I pointed out that I was in fact surfing as we spoke, but again I was told that was nor possible.

So for the time being, if your BT BB is off try that fix, until they sort the DNS issue

What DNS issue? I haven't experienced any issues with DNS.

Also whats your dialling code, their may have been a service outage in your area today. I know their was in mine!

Seems to be sorted now and it wasnt listed on the service status web page.
My code is 01492. When I spoke to them it was just described as "a major outage". I couldnt get online all day, then I tried a change on my DNS settings which worked. I went back to the normal DNS settings since about 5.30 pm without problems.

Hmm I've never had any issues with BT's DNS servers. Tried OpenDNS but found their to be no advantage on BT.

Everything is fine now, it just seems that yesterday when using the normal two DNS servers I couldnt get access. All they said to me it was part of a major outage, that could mean anything with the overseas call center.

Ah I'm on the Old Colwyn one, just under 400 meters away.........you should know by know, never listen to those lot not from our shores, they aint got a clue, they just read "scripts", whichever one sounds close enough to our problem......which is normally way out.

I was on the OC one when I lived up by the Semaphore- barely managed to get ADSL there when it came out. I live Colwyn Heights now and im on the bay exchange just managing to get 4 meg.

May not be local for long if the missus gets her way, she wants to move as there is no view here........not like the last place in Deganwy, had a view right over at the castle in conwy.
Me, I love it here, aint cared about view.....only about speed, d/l'ing at 831kbps at the mo and loving it.lol
Had a m8 living on the heights, though it was years ago, was working for Dixons in Llandudno then, dont know where he is now.
