Upload Penalty! Throughput drops to 1/3 when uploa

[link to this post]

Does anyone have any info about this?

Getting 1.9Mb/s total, including the up "ack" stream, when it's downloading

But when I upload something as well, the total throughput drops to 750Kb/s

Should I ask the tech support desk about this? I always hold off on asking them, because I'm never quite sure if they understand me or not, even though they try their best!

This is usenet download, but upload can be anything, either usenet or FTP upload, the result is the same. Instant drop of throughput, see pic:

It's BT Option 3.

Update: spoke to tech support, and they just waffled on & on about how you only get 448kbps upload. I tried telling them about how it was the TOTAL THROUGHPUT that was dropping, like an upload penalty, and so they just waffled ON & ON some more until I gave up

could be aggressive traffic shaping, BT are good at that.

I'm sorry but you come across as very knowledgeable. BT don't have no "upload penalty" I mean c'mon.

The reason your download speeds drops is, your PC cant pass data across the connection fast enough so the sending server whether that be Usenet or even whatever drops the throughput whilst waiting for your PC to say yeah thats been received ok send the next packet.

Try doing a ping when your uploading and BT also introduce a "ping penalty" when your uploading.

See my above post for the reason. Every ISP I have been with has been the same, Plusnet, Pipex, Nildram all when they were in their good days too.

Why thank you. You fail English? That's unpossible.

NO WAY do you account for a 1300Kbps deficit with "our PC cant pass data across the connection fast enough".

Try doing the same operations on a local 10Mbps ethernet network for testing and see if you come back with a 1300kbps deficit. You... uh ... WON'T.

Even if I wasn't knowledgeable, where do you get off having that attitude? This is a *public* forum. You weren't "sorry" at all, you were just throwing a baseless slur in my direction.

So you're BT staff. So can I assume that "don't have no" is an intentional double negative?

The tests do the download and upload at different times.

It is down to the delays for TCP ACKS, nothing fancy see http://www.thinkbroadband.com/faq/sections/troubleshooting.html#60

381 kbps up

speedtest.net (while uploading 1 file to usenet @ ~50KBps)
860 kbps down
249 kbps up

adslguide.org
Date 28/07/08 15:08:56
Speed Down 510.79 Kbps ( 0.5 Mbps )
Speed Up 375.80 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )
Port 8095
Server speedtest2.adslguide.org.uk

adslguide.org (while uploading 1 file to usenet @ ~50KBps)

Speed Down 465.76 Kbps ( 0.5 Mbps )
Speed Up 259.54 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )
Port 8095
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 7616 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 6500 kbps

I have to say the feeling was mutual, your post was very biased towards blaming BT for something which has nothing to do with them. If you had come along and said your having this problem any ideas of what it is, instead of saying well its BT's fault their shaping then you would have got a completely different reply.

As for working for BT, nope I don't work for BT.
