I recently removed the Norton software as it had negative affects on my computer during startup (took ages before you could use the machine). Might give McAfee as go as I'm using a free one at the moment

I've had the standard McAfee running for years and updates are frequent (and automatic if you want). A post below mentions CPU usage - negligible during normal usage and even when running a weekly scan all files I can still use the machine and hardly notice the effecty of it running. Sometimes during boot it seems to take a little longer - why? I don't know but it is never excessive.
Must be a pretty old machine then. I have the ful 2008 version of Norton running on this laptop and it works fine, no problem at all. the Bt version is running on a 400Mhz machine also with no problem.
I hung on to the Computer Associates version for as long as possible, but now that they are withdrawing it I have no choice. On my old-ish XP PC, everything I start takes noticeably longer to load with McAfee.
I have installed on four Computers - two Laptops, Vista and two PCs, XP.
Everything is working perfectly after two days, have noticed no alteration in Boot Up time from the old Norton product on any of the machines. Only thing it seems is Internet Explorer (7) freezing more than usual. However as there has just been a Microsoft Security update for IE this may be the cause.
I'm using Norton Internet Security 2009 and its faster and lighter than previous releases.
I had the free Norton stuff installed before and it worked fine but I had problems with the BT Yahoo! Security Dashboard thingy - basically, its not very compatible with Vista.
I was skeptical about this change as i was previously 6 years ago plus a long term McAfee user and when I switched to the BT Norton product I noticed a substantial improvement in the running and lack of conflicts on both my desktop and laptop. However the Norton virus subscription on the laptop was refusing to renew so I took the opportunity to update to the new BT McAfee product. No problems and new software appears to be running efficiently on both machines
