BT Broadband Not Working

[link to this post]

Hi there, just wondered if anyone could shed some light on the situation Im in,
My BT home hub has started to intermittently dropping connection, whenever it wants, (broadband and wireless lights are lit and internet light is off) and after many call to BT technical support, Im still no further to resolving the issue.

Sometimes its on and sometimes if off, and after trying three different modem/routers there is no difference in the connection whether it be wired or wireless, because at first I thought I might be the hub at fault. Also I have tried using the test socket which the technical support told me to use, which makes no difference.

Also lately the speed has dropped dramatically, supposed to be on up to 8MG
Ive done a speed test on www.thinkbroadband.com www.speedtest.net and
http://.speedtester.bt.com which always fails with an error message.

www.thinkbroadband.com test result:
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/123058441545143727213.html

www.speedtest.net:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/380937371.png

http://speedtester.bt.com
Always says
TestingPlease Wait
The performance tester is now testing broadband connection, your configures download throughput speed for this service is 135k
Please do not move away from this page and do not start any other download activity.

The it fails with this error message:
Test Error PT cannot perform assured rate throughput test, please try again later.
But later its always the same

Can anyone help, thanks.

Between this,

In reply to:

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 3,012 / 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 47,464 / 0

And this,

It looks very much like an old-fashioned line fault, ie, dodgy connection somewhere. Do you have any noticable problems with the voice side of things? Any crackling, rustling, hissing sounds when you make a voice call?

Another thing to try next time you experience a problem - take the phone off the hook and see if the broadband suddenly reconnects.

Yes, the line has been becoming more crackly, and I have noticed that occationally, when an imcoming call is answered the broadband disconnects.

Bingo. Old-fashioned voice fault it is then. That needs to be fixed first.

http://bt.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bt.cfg/php/enduser/cci/bt_catpage.php?p_sid=D1kmJGmj&cat_lvl1=345&cat_lvl2=353&cat_lvl3=375&p_cv=3.375&p_cats=345,353,375&p_display=1

and look at "troubleshoot phone and broadband faults" to help decide if the problem is on your or BT's side of the wiring.

Thanks for that, I phoned bt and eventually they sent an engineer to fix the line fault. The phone isn't crackly anymore.
However the broaband speed is still the same slow speed it was, would I have to wait a few days to see if it improved?

If it's a big jump i.e at least two profile steps, then if the profiling system is behaving itself I'd expect to see it rise within a 24hr period of course providing that it stays stable.

However, the profiling system does have off days / weeks / months and it might still take 3 - 5 days for an improvement to occur.

As above, it may take a few days. Hopefully the line fault hasn't raised your noise margin to try and keep the connection working, if so that can take some effort to sort out.

Try the speed test again in at the weekend and see how it goes, if it's still iffy come back again with another copy of the router's figures and what the BT speedtester says.

Don't be tempted to keep switching the router on and off, unplugging from the line, etc. That can trick the BT systems into thinking you have a problem and the profile won't improve.

Hiya, just letting you know that when BT decided to send another engineer to test the broadband, it suddenly began to work before he arrived.
So what ever the problem was they must have sorted it at there end, because im now dowloading at normal speeds (around 3000 - 4000kbps)

Thanks for your helpful advise
