A lot less Spam!

[link to this post]

Anyone noticed that there's a lot less Spam getting through ( I mean into the Spam folder) these days? I would regularly get 10+ every day up to about October, but now it's down to one or two. (My folder had 300+ messages at one point.) My wife has the same experience. Does this mean that BT is actually deleting a lot before it even gets onto the web page, or is there just less about?

I don't use BT stupid yahoo email system, I never liked Bt going to Yahoo in the first place when I was first with BT, I refuse to use that system

I must admit I don't get so much spam on my own domain, so maybe something have happened somewhere.

Probably a lot to do with the criminals' ISP of choice, McColo, being taken out recently.

That was months ago, any repreive from that will be long gone now. Ok it was November, but you forget how quickly things can move with IT.

As for getting less spam, if you ask my Gmail account I seem to be getting slightly more. My Yahoo account is getting less, but more of it is getting into my inbox, Yahoo's spam filters seem to be getting worse everyday.

I've just been checking the numbers (I don't have the very latest, couple of weeks old, as I've been off work), and it's back to roughly 2/3 the level prior to McColo's shutdown, so it's mostly bounced back. [censored].

It largely depends on the state of the main botnets,

Storm,
Kraken,
Srizbi,
Mega-D

And it looks like they are all back up and running. What this event will probably ensure is that the botnet operators try and avoid using the same hosts as their competitors.

What really needs to happen is all ISP's require prior authentication of sending addresses like BT currently do. Yahoo need to do this, they send over 95% of web mail based spam.
Once you have ISP's and individual computers mostly locked down, all you then need to do is shutdown single servers, or groups of them.

From experience the amount of spam I was receiving dropped massively when they were taken out of operation. It has crept back up, but has never come close to reaching the same level since.
