Remaining Contract

[link to this post]

Hi guys, its not that i'm desperate to get away from BT, cos i have had no problems with them at all, but Sky is offering up 16mb in my town. I have posted my router stats on here before and they have been analysed with encouraging results. However i found myself tied to a BT contcat until June.
Well i'm not exactly counting the minutes but i emailed them yesterday when i realised i pay my broadband charges in advance.
A very kind personfrom BT called Charu answered very quickly confirming i have paid up until the 30th of April. My contract runs out on the 9th June. Well it seems to me all i owe is the difference between 30thApril and 9thJune. Is this too simplistic? Should i cancel now and offer to pay the difference can they get me with an early cancellation fee?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Darren

Do NOT cancel (if it is just broadband that you want to move, not your phone line as well) but ask for a MAC code, you will be liable to end of your contract up to the 9th of June, Bt should then automatically charge you up to the end of contract. The Mac code lasts approx 30 days you ll be able to use it within that time frame, if you do not use it you'll carry on with BT

Anyone else can offer more advice please ???
0800 800 030 (Bt Mac), have your bt account number ready

I haven't lost my mind, it's backed up somewhere

Hi there Caz, thanks for the reply. Don't worry when i meant cancel i just meant terminating my contract with BT. I think if for example i telephoned for my mac code tomorrow, they would tell me that i am under contract until the 9th June, to which i would say that i have already paid up until the 30th of April as i pay in advance, and all they can charge me is about 1 month and 9 days.
Does that seem right?

Thanks
Darren

Yes it does, all you have to do is to make sure that they won't carry on charging you for the standard three months in advance from April onwards, just need to check your (online) billing.
When you ask for a MAC ask them to confirm that if you move to another provider before the end of contract your BB will teminate on the 9th of June and so will the charges.

You should be getting your MAC number by phone (not email anymore), double check it with them.

MAC FORMAT example : BBIP1757713/DJ29K or FTIP01753715/BD19J etc.

Good luck

Hi Caz. Will they make me wait until 9th June before allowing me to move to Sky even if i pay the one month and 9 days now which would mean i have paid till the end of my contract?
Thanks

No you can move now, (broadband only not your phone line) well as soon as you get your MAC, then regiister with sky, it could then take up to two weeks to move you onto their system, maybe less. Your BT liability to costs will remain the same - up to the 9th of June. no matter how soon or late you make your move
