BT Routers - which one do they use ?

I shall try and explain

A friend of mine has a BT Broadband service - not seen it myself so not sure
what equipment they have

is there a standard one and how do you access the settings ?

could do with knowing the default ID and Password

any info appreciated

Depending on how long the user has had the service, they may have one of the older BTVoyagers or a BTHomeHub Version 1, 1.5 or 2. Alternatively, they may have gone out and bought a router for themselves.

Routers are usually accessed through one of the following IP addresses (with a browser) : 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.254 unless the user has changed that address.

The default user name and password for the router itself are usually on a label on the bottom or back of the router. If the user has changed it then the only option is to do a factory re-set if you cannot gain access.

The user name for the BTBroadband service itself will depend on how long the user has been connected. Typically it will be something like [email protected] or the users email [email protected] in these cases the password will normally be the same as the e-mail password.

For a more recently-connected user the user name can simply be [email protected] with the password of bt.

In any case, the user should have documentation from when they signed-up giving all the appropriate information.

Depends what router your friend have got, BT have got a few, the main ones now was the BT home hub 1.5 or the new version 2

Version 1.5 will either be Admin and Admin for username and password or Admin and the serial number for the password which is on the back of the router.

You can get into the hub interface by BThomehub or 1092.169.1.294


the new version 2, I have only mucked around with a couple of times as I still got the older version, but this is what I remember.

Username is again admin

password is on the back of the hub under password, on the version I saw it also came on a bit of card.

you use bthomehub.home to acess the control panal.

there is also one called the voyager,, but apart from the very old one I have never mucked around with one, but I expect your friend have one of the home hubs and if he joined in the last few months it will certainly be the Version2.

If the Wireless part is not being used, then turning it off is a good idea, I did that when I set up a friends connection and computer. I expect it will also save a bit of power as well.

is there anything special about BT that mena syou have to use their equipment ?

i'm wondering about the option if needed of using one of those Thompson ADSL modems
we used to all use a few years ago

if we have user id / password will this work ?

i use a draytek router on my own adsl and i know there are a lot of settings we dont usually alter but in modem days we used to get along ok ?

You can use any router you want as long as it have a built in ADSL modem and most do. You can even use a USB ADSL modem if you want, nothing special about the home hub at all, apart from BT firmware.

You use [email protected] as the username and password is blank, some routers don't like it being blank, sop just put anything in.

You won't be able to use the BT hub phone, but since that is a load of rubbish anyway, you will not be missing much, Bt vision may or may not work with a different router, but it does use the QOS system, and the BT Home hub is needed for that.

I know someone on BT Broadband and they are still using the old frog modem.
