Difference between BT HH 2 Type A & Type B

[link to this post]

Hi All,

I currently have a BT HH 2 Type A at firmware vers. 8.1.H.G. I have just renewed my BB contract with BT and they have sent me another HH 2 but it is a Type B.

Does anyone know what the difference between the two types, if any, is and whether it is worth the hassle of changing them over. Feel inclined to keep the new one as a spare should the original pack up.

TIA

TJ

MY first homehub was a type B and it proved to be faulty. The second one I received was a type A and so far seems o.k. I would like to know if there is any difference too. No one at BT seems to know or is willing to say!

Only info I've managed to get so far is the following quote from the BT Broadband website.

The latest, most up-to-date versions of BT Home Hub 2.0 firmware are:

Software version 8.1.H.G (Type A)
Software version 4.7.5.1.83 (Type B)
There are two versions of the latest Hub 2.0 firmware because of changes in our Hub manufacturing process. Functionality of both firmware versions is identical.

Not exactly overly helpful!

No, and I am not entirely convinced about the bit regarding them being identical!

A look at the GPL source BT have released would indicate the firmware for Type B is not written by Thomson but a company called Jungo.

You might also see BT's logo appear here:

Question is whether the hardware is the same..

Seems a case of same hardware different software running. Odd but the Thomson software was [censored], slow to update, generally rubbish!

Yep that's what I was wondering. I was interested to know if the wifi range had been improved with the type B version. Guess the only way to find out will be to try it, just wanted to find out without the hassle of changing it over.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
