Hi i am new to this forum and also new to BT. I get very bad PING on servers in the UK and would like to have interleaving turned off.
Could someone PLEASE assist me with this as it is driving me crazy and i would like to be able to play online games without any hassel and HUGE pings 70+.

Please PM asap to help! thank you very much!
That's unlikely to be an interleaving problem. The BT-published effect of interleaving IIRC is now 20-40ms. Do the pings vary a lot, and if so from what to what?

Well my pings vary but mainly go from 70 - 120 but vary rarely does it dip below 70.

The thing that baffles me is when i was with UK Online previously which was a 2mb service i was getting 25 ping and supposedly upgrading to BT 20mb service has cause my ping to rocket! its crazyness!

There you have it! The 20Mbps service is wonky. (I hadn't seen your other thread before smile).

What exchange are you on?

How do i find out exactly? I Live in Hutton Essex and i think the nearest exchange is in Brentwood a couple of miles away. But if there is some sort of test i can run which will tell me then i will do it when i get home from work and post back here?

Put your phone number into here and post the link to the result smile.

But if it is Brentwood I just looked at it and you can get all the good LLU providers, so long as they aren't sold out on that exchange.

Your line stats when you get home would be useful, to see what sort of connection speeds you should get. How would under 24ms pings (on interleaved) or probably a tiny bit more expensive under 20ms?

Tell you what, you can answer the important bits now. Put your phone number into both of these and see what they say:-

https://www.o2broadband.o2.co.uk/getBroadband.do
https://www.bethere.co.uk/web/beportal/ourproducts

O2 is interleaved only, Be has Fast Path available on unlimited and Pro. To compare products and prices after that, see MKD's O2/Be comparison and costs documents. Note the cashback amounts, which are currently much lower than they have been for months.

Confirm if it is Brentwood or not for me, then look at the rest of the info I've given you and see what speeds/products those two suggest. What speed connection do you get with BT? Download speed will do if you don't know the approx connection speed.

I bet you are on a new 12-month contract with BT since your non-upgrade. But the O2/Be first-year and ongoing costs may make a buy-out feasible.

Just a quick reply as i am still at work and cant do some of the things you ask.

Well it turns out my exchange IS Brentwood. Which is about 3 miles from my home.

Your line stats when you get home would be useful, to see what sort of connection speeds you should get.

Could you please explain how i get the line stats for you? Sorry but i have never done it before.

How would under 24ms pings (on interleaved) or probably a tiny bit more expensive under 20ms?

Sorry this question doesnt make sense i dont think?

I have put my number into the companies websites you suggested and they both said i should get around 6mb speeds on my line.

Yes we are on a 12 Month contract i believe or it may even be 18 month as companies seem to be pushing you into more now!

Ah!!! Add "suit you". But judging from what O2 and Be said, unless your stats are better than I expect from the O2 and Be estimates then you are looking at 24ms or better, interleaved, in my opinion.
I have put my number into the companies websites you suggested and they both said i should get around 6mb speeds on my line.

If you migrated to O2 Standard (I assume they offered you that, not O2 Access which is as bad as you have now or possibly worse), then going about it the right way your full first year would cost £25 if you have an O2 contract mobile phone, £65 if you have an O2 PAYG (but giving you at least £44 of any network phone calls), or £75 with neither. Having said that, the O2 mobile number that is used to get the discount doesn't need to be yours or even registered at your address. Just someone you are close to who doesn't want to use it to get an O2 broadband discount themselves.

If you migrated to Be Value, which will have a 40GB pm cap from the middle of this year, the first year total cost would be £65.

Something to think about perhaps, even if you have to pay off the BT broadband contract? Your phone stays with BT. There is no comparison in the service - no BT IP profiles or silly noise margin settings, no slowdowns, steady pings.

For instance, taken just now from the Manchester area, O2 Standard with interleaving:-

Pinging jolt.co.uk [84.234.17.86] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 84.234.17.86: bytes=32 time=22ms TTL=123

Reply from 84.234.17.86: bytes=32 time=22ms TTL=123

Ping statistics for 84.234.17.86:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 22ms, Maximum = 22ms, Average = 22ms

See how it goes, but that sounds too much of an improvement to be true tongue.

If it stays good, then great! If not, give me a server or two to ping.
